Secret Morocco
Few Europeans know of this sunny friendly coast, only a few kilometers from Spain- they think of Morocco as Marrakesh and desert! Here fertile lands growing amazing fruit and vegetables sweep down to the golden beaches and the warm Mediterranean sea teeming with fish that can be eaten the next day in many excellent restaurants.. The King has required sensitive development- his summer palace is ten minutes from the complex-so buildings are low rise, but plumbing and roads are modern, and there is very little crime.
The sea is twenty minutes walk from the complex, with dunes, then safe shelving sand into the clean sparkling water. There are umbrellas and icecreams near the entrance steps, but the golden sands stretch a long way if you prefer a patch to yourselves.
The Marjane supermarket is 10 mins drive away where you can buy just about anything (including wine , beer and spirits) - or you can buy sparking fish caught that morning at the fish market in M'Diq and fresh vegetables in the market there.
The excellent - and beautiful- 18hole golf course, (where you can see the Royal Family play on occasion), is beside the sea. For enthusiasts for golf, there is the Tangier golf course to provide variety , about 3/4 hour drive away as well.
There is an excellent selection of restaurants within walking distance, from pizza cooked in the authentic ovens to gourmet dining.
The life of Moroccans still reflects an ancient culture. The medinas of Tetouin and Chefchouan take you back to past centuries, you can watch unchanged handicrafts being practiced and buy jewel- like pottery , carpets and kaftans. Crime figures are very low and people are welcoming and friendly. Prices are lower than in Europe, especially in the wonderful restaurants. Fish straight from the sea is a speciality- from the market cafes in MDiq to the sophisticated restaurant at Cabo Corner ten minutes walk from the complex. Cafes do not serve alcohol, but most restaurants and hotels do, and it can be bought at the supermarket at prices similar to UK.
Bird watchers will glory in the 400 species that migrate between Africa and Europe here and naturalists admire the carpets of wild flowers on the mountains in Spring. There is an excellent riding stables within walking distance- midnight riding along the beach is popular. There is a water park with fairground attractions about 15 mins away, and thalassotherapy at a luxurious centre ten minutes away- or Moroccan massage at a herbal therapy centre in the Medina
The friendly couple who manage the flats for me live near the complex and are delighted to advise on places to go and things to see, whether you hire your own car or use their air conditioned chauffeur service to go on expeditions.
Things to Do
The apartment and complex has everything you need -you could just chill out! Lie in the sun by the pool , watch your favourite programns on satelite TV,play tennis, let your children splash in the pool, swing and slide in the playground or run round the garden , it is a safe gated complex .
But if you want amusement and interest, there is so much choice. Go on expeditions to nearby resorts, have a camel ride, watch the magicians, eat an ice cream - or slide down the tubes in the water park, maybe have an hour or a days pampering at the thalassotherapy centre 15 mins away. Go duty free shopping in Ceuta or find a bargain in the medina. Take a ride on the excellent horses from the stables nearby. Stroll to the golden sands that stretch for miles and swim in the crystal clear watrers of the warm meditteranean.
The drive through the mountains to the blue town of Chaouan is magical: the town is enchanting and full of interesting things to buy or you can go on a guided hike through the mountains.
Explore the fascinating Moroccan way of life, visit the local fish market, go out in a fishing boat, visit the museums and handcraft centre in Tetouin. Take to the mountains and see Chefchouan, famous for the beauty of its tiny blue- shadowed alleys, inviting handicraft shops and views. This is a good place for hiking too.
You could visit Spain or Gibraltar for an awayday to see a contrasting way of life- the ferry is 3/4 hour- or helicopter to Malalga from the Ceuta heliport.
