The Old Monastery Apartment

This beautiful two bedroom ground floor Georgian apartment is set right on the water’s edge on the Blackwater river with panoramic views across to County Waterford and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Most of our visitors have enjoyed the calm and peace the building gives out and indulge in walking down to the wall, where the river meet the sea directly in front of the house to watch the daily routine of the small fishing and sailing boats coming and going throughout the summer. The whaling ships which once filled the bay are now long gone!

The house, originally built around 1812 for a wealthy merchant in the days when Youghal was a thriving commercial port, was purchased by the Church, then used as a Monastery until the 1980s and the apartment still retains many of its original features.

The beautiful lounge with its oak floors, grand crystal chandelier, large ceiling rose (imported from France in the 19th century) and the original fireplace has high windows with window seats to sit in comfort and look out on the river and estuary.
To complement that there is a large flatscreen TV, DVD/video, with Sky TV and an internet point. There is also a surround sound system and an I-pod docking station to allow you to listen to classical music while you dine in this wonderful room.

There are 2 double bedrooms, 1 king-size with an ensuite and a second twin bedroom. Quality bedding and linen is provided to wrap you in luxury while you enjoy the peace and calm of this house.
The main bathroom has a full size bath with shower to relax in at the end of a strenuous days enjoyment! There is also a space with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

The fully equipped kitchen/breakfast room, with its views across the river, is fitted with all the latest appliances for the keen chef. Neff oven and microwave/oven, ceramic 5 plate hob, Maytag American fridge freezer and a double drawer dishwasher.
We provide everything you could need coffee machine, toaster, kettle, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery and, of course, a bottle opener!
The breakfast area provides seating for four where you can watch the sea as you enjoy your breakfast and plan your day. Take some tips from the visitors log book where previous visitors have recorded their trips and adventures and recommended places to visit and enjoy.

Outside there a large patio, gas barbeque and seating for 6, where your can have breakfast or your evening meal - Irish weather permitting! In July and August you can easily catch mackerel straight off the garden wall and put them straight on the barbeque (we provide the fishing rods). Occasionally dolphins can be seen herding the mackerel into the bay but we would advise against putting these on the barbeque!

Youghal
Youghal town centre is a 5 minute walk from the apartment.

No need for taxis or worrying about having a drink and driving just wander into town, enjoy one of the many restaurants or coffee shops or have a Guinness in one of the many traditional pubs and take in the atmosphere of a real Irish music session

Youghal itself is a medieval historic town. Once a fortified strategic port, much of the 800 year old town walls still stand, as does the impressive clock gate - a four story tower that straddles the main street. Queen Elizabeth gave the town and the surrounding countryside to Sir Walter Raleigh, who is reported to have subsequently lost it all in a card game! He is said to have introduced the potato to Ireland here. Look out for the Walter Raleigh and Devonshire names as you walk around.
In the late 1800s the town evolved into a major whaling station and was the base for the movie Moby Dick. Try the pub with the same name.
It remains an active small fishing port and every day you can still watch the boats unloading their catch down in the harbour. Just wait until they come past your own back door, then wander down to the harbour!

There is a sandy Blue Flag beach a 10/15 minute walk (or a 2 minute drive) from the apartment - just past the lighthouse. Stretching for 5 miles, it makes for an enjoyable walk whatever the weather and there is a hotel halfway down should you feel the need for refreshments. Lifeguards are on site all day during July and August.

Near the beach there is a modern public swimming pool complex - open 7 days a week, pay as you go, and if you feel the need the complex includes a fully equipped gym.

The central location makes Youghal an ideal base for touring the Cork/Kerry/Waterford area.

Cork City: With its shops and the English Market for the foodies is a 40 minute drive away.
Cobh: The Heritage Centre at the Titanics last port of call has a wonderful and very moving museum. 40mins.
Ballymaloe Cookery School with its cookery shop and café. 25mins.
Fota Island: Visit the wildlife park where animals roam in wide open spaces or play a round of golf in Fota Island golf course.40mins
Waterford for the Crystal Factory and the unique Book Shop/cafe in the former cinema in the town centre. 1 hour.
Lismore with its stunning castle. 30mins.
Blarney Castle and kiss the Blarney Stone. 1hr 15mins.
Killarney and the Lakes - 2hour drive
Dublin: 30mins.
Really! Save the 3 hour+ drive and the petrol: Fly up to Dublin for an overnight stay using Aer Lingus from Cork airport. The flight takes 30 minutes and can be really inexpensive if you book early!
