The Silver Coast area of Portugal, named after its many wonderful sandy beaches, is a relatively undeveloped area retaining much of its traditional Portuguese charm. São Martinho do Porto is a small but remarkably picturesque seaside town. The town is built around a shell shaped bay that provides safe bathing away from the strong Atlantic currents. The bay also benefits from warmer waters thanks to its sheltered location. The village has maintained its marvellous character and much of the older historic parts still have cobbled streets.The town is small, but has all necessary supplies and a daily market selling local produce & excellent fresh fish. Just minutes away from such places as Nazaré, Alcobaça, Coimbra, Fatima, Leiria, Batalha, Caldas da Rainha and Obidos. Ancient monasteries, roman ruins, thermal springs and much more can be enjoyed all within a casual day trip. There is the usual array of waterside bars, restaurants and local shops and a railway station with a service from Lisbon and buses to local towns and Lisbon also stop near the railway station.

Stretching from Lisbon to Fiqueira da Foz, Portugal’s Costa de Prata (Silver Coast) is a gem of largely undiscovered beauty and gets its name from the effect of the sun on the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. With 200 kilometres of white sandy beaches lapped by the crystal clear water of the Atlantic Ocean, this region of the Silver Coast is a variety of culture and landscape, along the coast you can sample a magnificent variety of seafood, discover enchanted grottos and explore stunning mountains, misty lakes and valleys. Slightly further afield is the famous religious and pilgramage town of Fatima, Roman ruins at Conimbiga, Castles at Almoural, Mavao,Tomar and Sintra, palaces at Jerinomos, Mafra and Sintra and the monestry of Batalha.
