Barra da Tijuca or simply Barra (pronounced Ba-ha) is the longest beach in Rio de Janeiro, with 18 km or 11 miles of clean and tropical blue water with untouched and still pristine stretches of white sand. The sunset is beautiful, especially in the winter.
Barra is a combination of ideal beach conditions with numerous good restaurants and bars. You will find several "barracas" (in portuguese) or kiosks on the beach selling coconut milk, caipirinha (like margaritas but made with sugar cane rum) and food. It's quiet on week days and crazy on hot summer weekends from December to March.
Barra introduced a new concept of life in the country. It is characterized by big luxury complexes or condominiums with an incredible leisure infrastructure (sports courts, pools, lakes, gyms, boats to the beach, restaurants, pharmacy and convenience store, etc...).for exclusive use of its residents and guests offering them a complete life without the need of having to leave the complex.
You can enjoy good restaurants... and churrascarias (BBQ) in Barra.
Barra Shopping is the largest mall in South America and the most popular in the city. Leather goods, shoes, belts are good quality. You can even buy the famous Havaianas flip-flops. The mall has coffee shops and restaurants. It's 10 minutes by bus, taxi or van from the complex.
Downtown Barra da Tijuca is a new urban development intended to match the nature and a traditional downtown area. There area many shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, offices and a movie theatre complex.. At night, the shops close and the night life begins with live music at any several restaurants. It's 15 minutes from the complex.
If you want to go to Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon you can get there by bus or taxi but the best option is by van. They are cheap and takes 30 minutes. Just stick your hand out when they approach and they will stop.
So if you think about putting together nature and all the good things big cities can provide... Barra da Tijuca in Rio is your destination. Have fun!
