Le Marche is a stunningly beautiful region of Italy on the eastern side of the country on the Adriatic coast? Inland, the breathtaking mountains form a pastoral idyll with rolling hills and striking hilltop towns and villages. This is unspoilt Italy, where Italians come to enjoy renaissance art and architecture or share a seaside holiday with their bambini on one of the many blue flag beaches.
This area of Le Marche offers the visitor a wide variety of places to see, both locally and further afield:
Ascoli Piceno, a beautiful historic town, 40 minutes drive away is the capital of the province. It boasts many stunning buildings, fashioned from travertine marble; giving the effect of a place bathed in a honey hue. After seeing the paintings of the famous Venetian artist Carlo Crivelli, why not relax with a coffee and cake in the recently restored Art Deco Caffé Meletti famous for its house liqueur.
Loreto, just inland from Ancona and an hour’s drive from Montalto, is another ‘must see’ town. It is one of the most important Roman Catholic shrines in the world which holds, nevertheless, many attractions for the non-religious visitor. Its position, high up on a hill, gives wonderful views from the mountains to the sea. It is possible to combine a cultural visit to Loreto with a trip to the sea.
The Conero Peninsula, minutes from Loreto is a protected nature reserve. Mount Conero is visible as a landmark from some distance. If you like a peaceful beach away from the crowds, then Sirolo is the place. It has a blue banner for clean sea water and beaches. The hill top town is charming, traffic free and well cared for.
Closer to home; twenty minutes away, is the seaside town of Grottamare. It is a fashionable resort with an Edwardian feel to it. The beaches are well manicured in the best Italian tradition and good seafood restaurants can be found along its walkways. The old centre called Monte Castello on the top of the hill is also worth a visit.
Nature lovers and walkers will be thrilled by the Sibylline mountains and national park, approximately 90 minutes away. In Spring, the wild flowers form a carpet of brilliant hues.
Holidaymakers in need of a further adventure might like a day trip to Rome. A comfortable bus with facilities leaves Grottamare several times a day. It is a three hour stress free journey and costs only €29 return.
There are many more places to see locally, including countless hill top towns, each with amazing architecture and valuable artifacts. But most important are the people of Le Marche with their easy charm and warm hearted approach to foreigners. This fact alone will leave you with a desire to come back again. We certainly did!
Il Teatro is in the historical centre (centro storico) of the delightful hill top town of Montalto delle Marche which is situated only 25 minutes from the sea and not much further from the mountains of the Sybillini National Park.
With a floor area of 75 sqm this is a charming one bedroom townhouse that is set over two floors and sleeps up to four guests. The townhouse comes with a small roof terrace that has great views looking over the historical centre of Montalto in one direction, and in the other there are views of beautiful rolling countryside typical of this stunning region of Italy. There is a table and chairs on the terrace which makes it perfect for dining al fresco and, if it gets too hot, there is an umbrella to provide some shade which you will probably welcome if you are here at the height of an Italian summer.
On the ground floor you will find the double bedroom with large wardrobe, bedside cabinets and bedside lamps. There is also a chest of drawers so there is ample storage space. the windows have wooden shutters to keep out the sun if you feel like a lazy start to the day!
Also on the ground floor is the very well equipped kitchen with all the pots, pans, crockery, glasses and cooking utensils you will need. We provide all the basics in the kitchen such as salt, pepper, olive oil, tea, coffee, milk and sugar as well as a couple of bottles of wine. Moving from the kitchen you'll find access to the utility room where there is a washing machine.
The first floor has a large and airy lounge/ diner with sofa bed, flat panel television with DVD and CD player, a dining table and chairs. The first floor landing also provides access to the bathroom and the roof terrace.
