The house is beautifully decorated and consists of a newly fitted kitchen to western style and large garden facing fantastic panoramic views over the Knuckles range and Mahaveli river. Its a bird watchers paradise and is ideal to use as a base to travel around Srilanka.

Kandy is 100km (62miles) north east of Colombo and although the town lacks an airport, there are a number of buses and trains running between the two destinations.

It is Sri Lankas hill capital and, at 488 metres above sea level, has a much cooler and pleasant climate than Colombo or the southern towns. Kandy is classed as a World Heritage City by UNESCO and is home to the famous tooth relic of the Lord Buddha.

Kandy is the venue of the Esala Perahera, easily the most colourful festival in Asia, held in July/August each year, in honour of the tooth relic. The torch-lit streets are filled with elephants and costumed dancers as they pay homage to the casket of the sacred tooth relic carried by the king of the elephants. The procession moves along the streets for seven consecutive nights and concludes on the day of the August full moon.

The tooth relic is housed in a golden temple known as the Dalada Maligawa - the Temple of the Tooth. It is home to wonderful architecture and paintings, thanks to the patronage of the Kandyan kings.

Other attractions in Kandy include walking round the large and wonderful botanical garden, watching elephants bathing, taking in an evening show of Kandyan dancing and traditional fire walking, to say nothing of the museums, historical buildings, and the lovely views of the mountains and the lake.

The villa comprises 4 bedrooms in total; 2 double, 2 twin and 1 cots, 2 of the bedrooms with en-suite facilities. . This gives room for up to 9 people. Bed linen and towels are provided for your use.

The villa has television dvd. The music system will play cds, radio. A computer with Internet connection is also available for your use. If you need to keep in contact there is a telephone for incoming calls only.

There is room for 8 in the living room and 8 in the dining room. To prepare food you will find a cooker, a microwave, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a washing machine, a clothes drier, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.

simon says: "Sarah and I visited Sri Lanka in August / September 2008. It seems to have taken me a while to get around to submitting a review. Too chilled out after the holiday I guess. So first things first - the house on the hill. This is superbly located on one of the many hills around Kandy. The views are spectacular with unspoilt forrest and jungle in every direction. We found ourselves bird, insect, reptile and monkey watching on a regular basis. The accommodation itself is very clean and comfortable, which left us wanting for nothing. Further, with Aunty Chandra close by to help advise and suggest trips we felt as though we had our own personal tourist information office. Although the house is on a hill we often chose to walk both into and out of Kandy. This took approximately 25 minutes and was always an enjoyable experience, giving us plenty of opportunity to practice our limited Sinhalese. A big thanks to Auntry Chandras schooling is necessary here. The few phrases we learnt were always rewarded by cheerful responses. The city of Kandy is a fascinating place. There are the sites of special interest, obviously worth a visit, but just walking around town is equally rewarding. The hussle and bussle, sights and smells make a refreshing change to those of the UK or mainland europe. Never once did we feel unsafe or awkward. You must visit the central market. Get there early and go out the back to the vegetable and fish areas, its great. This brings us nicely onto food. There are literally dozens of places to eat, from street vendors to five star hotels. Even the latter represent excellent value. The pineapples are terrific, have one prepared for you on the street, and if thirsty get a king coconut. Of particular note was Aunty Chandras cooking. Be this breakfast or an evening meal. In all honesty it was better than anything we ever bought when out. Finally, as the house on the hill is roughly in the centre of Sri Lanka it makes a great base from which to explore the rest of the country. Independent travel is easy but all travel takes time: you need to slow down to the pace of the country and enjoy the scenery. Sri Lanka is an excellent holiday destination offering everything you could possibly want."
