"A wonderful holiday!! Im very happy to say that Château de Larunque exceeded our expectations. Our family of 14 people spent a memorable week, enjoying all and every of the many facilities of the house. Everything in and out is beautiful, clean, well maintained... the house itself, the pool, the garden... The theatre is amazing we simply loved it, with the harmonium to accompany our plays, the royal box with private toilet... The only thing we missed was that there were no lights at all in the veranda or outside the house. It didn’t bother us too much though, because we had candles for our late night drinks outside. We try to find a different spot every year for our all-together family-week but I wouldn’t be surprised if we came back to Larunque as it’s going to prove difficult to find a better house! "

"I cannot recommend Château de Larunque highly enough. We were a group of 9 25-30 yr olds however by parents also joined us for one night of the stay. Regardless of age, you are guaranteed to be enchanted by this property. Firstly it is huge, the rooms are all spacious, the three double and other single (could sleep at least 3) rooms on the first floor are all beautiful and with the high ceilings aren’t too hot in the summer sun. The two double and one twin rooms on the top floor are hot but they all have standing fans which easily keep you cool over night. The kitchen is fantastic for preparing your meals on the terrace (which also has a gas BBQ for your shrimps). The tennis court is in great condition and many a battle was held there. The swimming pool is both warm and a perfect size. The grand piano saw sing-alongs every night (as did the harmonium in the theatre). There is plenty to explore nearby, Bayonne is beautiful as is San Sebastian over the border in Spain, but we only spent two days of seven away from the Chateau because we were so content there. If I am lucky enough to have a family I will be taking them to Château de Larunque and in the mean time whilst I work on that prospect I will be rounding up more friends and finding the cheap flights to Biarritz or Pau and getting back a.s.a.p. Thanks to Polly and Lauren (the English owners who live 25 mins away) who went out of their way to look after us, and were especially kind when I fell ill with a virus over the last couple of days. Lovely folks. TIP: If you can take a data projector and a lap top, you can set up the projector to watch films on the back wall of the stage in the theatre, there is a speaker downstairs that you can take up to the theatre and if you take a red and white from single mono lead you can plug that in for cinema-volume sound for your films (or disco’s if the mood takes you). "The chateau was indeed spacious and wonderful, and had absolutley everything we needed for a good holiday, the only problems were it was poorly maintained and we had to call the owner out to repair quite a number of things. The repair man could only speak french but fortunately my husband is french and was able to communicate our host of problems which he promptly attended to. Its a shame the owner had failed to do a proper check before we arrived to save us such a difficult start."

"Chateau Larunque is an enchanting property with everything you could wish for in a holiday rental. Weve rented a few houses in Les Landes and always felt a bit cramped, especially with visiting friends. This time we had room to spare and loved the theatre, tranquil pool, tennis court and bamboo forest. The kids put on 2 plays, with a disco to follow and weve returned fitter from all the tennis and ping-pong matches. The supermarket in Urt is good and a short drive away, although we also had food delivered. Hossegor has a great beach for body boarding, but the best thing about this holiday was the wonderful atmosphere in the house. A perfect place for family and friends."

"A wonderful property and a thrilling suprise as one first arives along the secluded driveway. Internally the property does not disappoint - sizeable rooms all, downstairs with high ceilings, wooden flooring (ecxept in the kitchen). The sweeping stone staircase and glazed hallway atrium are beautiful: the pool is excellent, the tennis court in great condition and an added attraction for us. The peace and tranquility of the rear view (new hobby: chicken watching) with its southern aspects make a lovely vista all day but especially good in the evening on the verandah for evening meals (+ good barbecue facilities). The Theatre is an intersting folly and whilst has some novelty value, is a space which could be used by those of a more thespian bent than our party. The main bedrooms on the first floor are well presented, largely en-suite and with attractive furnishings, The three rooms on the second floor are adequate, but compared to the rest of the house, a little disappointing, being smaller, poorly ventilated and with only Velux-type rooflights. Although it does mean more people can stay, the quality of this part of the accommodation is not in keeping with the rest. Minor niggles, but ones which prevent this from getting a 10 out of 10 rating: for the size of the kitchen (which is at best "rustic") there isnt a lot of space for food storage: the large stove is effective but hardly attractive: the cooking utensils are ok but the lack of a remotely sharp set of knives troublesome. Lastly the number of light bulbs which had blown meant that some rooms remained dingy and inadequately lit. For all those relatively small issues, Larunque is a wonderful holiday home, without doubt exceeding all my families (all ten of us) expectations: we plan to return next year. Locationwise, we loved the proximity of the coast but not being there full time: the countryside is beautiful (and lush, and theres a reason for that: it rains a fair bit even in July). The Owners we met were charming, seemed genuinely concerned that we were happy and looked after ,and very welcoming. Nine out of ten!"

"The property was very unusual with very good facilities. The tennis court, swimming pool and grand piano got lots of use during our stay. The theatre was really a novelty and great photo opportunity! If we had more time an entire production could have been presented."

"The Chateau is amazing! If anything, the previous pictures/reviews do not do it justcie! Our group of 14 made full use of all on site facilities and also found the Chateau perfectly located to explore local towns/beaches etc. One small issue however was that, as with another of the reviews, we paid for a mid-week cleaner which never actually came, but that is the only negative in an otherwise brilliant week! Many thanks to the owners who were always on hand during the week to answer and queries, and more importantly for allowing us to enjoy this fantastic property!"

"Seven couples stayed in the chateau and it was ideal for us. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend the chateau as being an excellent venue for a large group. Likewise, it would be great for two families whose children could have the freedom of the grounds. However, we were disappointed to find that two of the major advertised features of the chateau were not available ie. the sauna and the theatre. We feel that we should have been advised of this in advance as both features had clearly not gone out of commission the day before we arrived. There seemed to be a chronic shortage of working lights and some of the rooms were exceedingly dark. The swimming pool doors had to be left permanently open - a safety hazard if one was with young children we felt. It was also dangerously dark in the swimming pool in the mornings and evenings. The chateau is a fantastic place to stay with even greater potential."

"This is a great place for a large group of people, whatever the weather. Lots of space inside and out. Good for cooking, eating, tennis, table tennis, swimming or simply exploring the grounds. Our group of eleven, increased to 14 with overnight visitors had a really good time."

"We had a fantastic stay at Chateau Larunque, a theatrical folly! The house, pool, tennis court and grounds were divine...our children didn't want to leave. They performed Cinderella in the theatre and entertained us on the piano. This house is a must for all who love family gatherings in the sun with a bit of foie gras thrown in!"

"we were with the whole family , three generations. Everybody has had a lovely week. The house was great, as was the swimmingpool( a bit cold!) The theater was an inspiration for young and old. The region: stJean de Luce; Biaritz, Bayonne and Bilbao very interresting. And aldo it was februari, we had beautiful weather and the house was cosy warm, with huge fires in the 'cheminee's. Philippine Lemstra There was trouble with the shower at the second etage. WE phoned about it, but nothing was done. Also we paid for mid-week cleaning, but nobody came. So we like a refund of 25 pounds (please in euro's)"

"This is a great holiday chateau, full of french character. We have just come back from a weeks stay and really enjoyed it. The pictures on the website do not do it real justice. Its beautiful from its enomous stone staircase and entrance to its huge rustic french kitchen. Our kids loved the pool, tennis courts and put on a great show in the theatre. We had some great parties. The ground are beautiful and the surrounding beaches in Biaritz and San sebastian are all you can wish for. It was like our home from home."

"If you want peace and quiet, this is the place. Fantastic atrium with imaginative pictures and curved staircase to first floor and intriguingly mirrored theatre. Large kitchen with all mod cons for special self catering holiday."

"Beautiful French chateau, set in a very peaceful location. Excellent facilities, including a fantastic indoor pool, extensive grounds and a tennis court. Good access to beaches and towns, makes this a perfect venue for a family holiday. Can easily accommodate up to 3 families. Cannot wait to return. "

"An imaginatively restored French Chateau enclosed in totally private grounds with a 60-seat theatre, an indoor swimming pool and a first class tennis court. On arrival, as you explore the place the rooms for the first time they seem to go on and on. The main hallway with its atrium style roof sets the tone and, if the decor is a bit idiosyncratic in places, it only adds to the charm. The description and pictures on the website didn't do it justice overall. It would have been great to have great log fires roaring in the living room and dining room, but not in July."
