the House in the Caslte
The Cyclades islands constitute a miracle of architecture and nature, attracting crowds of visitors every year. However, you can still find the original Cyclades in some of the small islands that have remained authentic – calm, without mass tourism or too many cars. One such island is Kimolos, in the Western Cyclades.
In the "Horio", the main town of the island – just one kilometre away from the port and three kilometres away from the clean sandy beaches – the white Cycladic-style houses form with their walls the Castle of Kimolos, built in the 16th century. One of these houses, renewed with respect for tradition in 2008, forms an independent self-catering accommodation for up to six people.
The house was fully renovated in 2008, keeping faith with the traditional character of the property. Because it is a part of the 16th century castle, recognized as an official Monument by the Greek government, the renovation was carried out under the supervision of the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities.
The two bedrooms are on the 1st floor, each with an individual entrance and are connected to the main bathroom and kitchen through interior stairs.
The bedroom on the west has 2 single beds and one sofa-bed, TV, DVD player, ceiling fan and a balcony with stairs leading to Sotira Square, with its Cycladic style churches.
The bedroom on the east has one double bed, an armchair that can become a bed, ceiling fan, traditional fireplace, WC and a balcony with stairs to the impressive ruins of the interior of the castle.
On the ground floor is the main bathroom, equipped with a wall-mounted hair dryer, and the kitchen-dining room, with a table and six chairs, ceramic cooker, oven, large fridge, washing machine, coffee machine (for filter, espresso and cappuccino), a full set of cookware, crockery and cutlery, as well as a period marble sink and traditional fireplace.
Included as standard features there are also:
• four mountain bikes for adults (26"), two for children (one 24", one 20") together with helmets
• a rugged 3-wheel pushchair
• WiFi internet
Life in Kimolos
Life has changed little over the last 50 years in Kimolos. Youll find more donkeys than cars, and your kids will be safe while playing outside – the only danger being they¢ll get lost in the alleys. If you wish, you can get to know the neighbours - even if you don¢t speak Greek! You¢ll find the local people open, friendly, hospitable.
Showing consideration for local customs will be much appreciated: if you learn to say "Kalimera" and "Kalispera", to be patient with Kiria Katina¢s leisurely approach to making your coffee (no, there is no freddo). It¢s also good to respect the economy of the islands: don¢t waste too much water (water comes by boat), don¢t throw out too much rubbish. Then, you will really be able to feel at home in Kimolos and its people.
