Garden Apt, Patara Prince, Kalkan
In the heart of Ancient Lycia, where the Taurus Mountains meet the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean sea, is Kalkan. Originally a Greek fishing village it has grown into a much loved resort without loosing any of its charm. It is delight to through the cobbled streets of the old town with its whitewashed houses and brightly coloured bourgainvilleas. During the day, relax around swimming pools or sea bathing platforms whilst enjoying stunning views of the coast and mountains. Or you can use local buses (dolmus) to reach the stunning beaches of Kaputas, Patara or Olu Deniz. You could take to sea on a lazyday boat trip along the coast from the harbour or discover one the twenty ancient sites within 1-2 hours travel of Kalkan. At night, Kalkan has a delightful atmosphere. Enjoy some late night shopping or dine out at one of the 100 of so restaurants and bars beneath the skies full of stars.
Overlooking Kalkan, lies the Patara Prince Resort, described by the New York Times as “Nothing short of a seaside paradise”. Here 200 metres of private seafront is bordered by bathing platforms under shady olive trees. Behind it, the resorts hotel and privately owned apartments are sensitively sculptured into the hillside admist mature tropical gardens of banana trees to name but a few. It really is an amazing place to stay and relax with every possible facility at your disposal.
Theres a choice of no less than three outdoor swimming pools, all with their own distinct styles, snack-bar service if required and sea views to die for. The Grand Pool is large 25 metre long seawater pool with separate childrens area. The exclusive round pool by the reconstruction Patara arch is for adults only to enjoy moments of quiet contemplation and has a cascading waterfall feature. Our personal favourite, the freshwater Infinity pool or Terrace pool is but a few minutes stroll from the apartment and is close to the childrens pool complete with slide.
During the Turkish school holidays (mid-June to mid-September) you can leave your children aged 4-10 years are the staffed childrens club. It offers morning and late afternoon activities such as art, games and watersports and has a small park area. Once a week there is an evening childrens disco. There are tennis courts (flood lit at night), volleyball, pool and snooker tables available. Or try the on-site watersports centre for a snorkel or dive in the crystal clear waters. They offer a full range of accredited courses for both beginners and advanced divers. There are several dive sites locally including islands, reefs and wall. Moray eels, turtles, stingrays, barracudas, sea bream, damsel fish, sea mullet, starfish, octopus, dolphins, nurse sharks, squid are just some of what you may see. For those into pampering theres a health club with gym (free from 8.30-12.30 daily plus a sauna , turkish bath and jacuzzi. Or why not treat yourself to a spa treatment or massage for a fraction of the cost of back home?

The Apollonian beach restaurant adjacent to the grand pool is the place to find open buffets and barbeque nights. The Agora courtyard restaurant is the place for steak, pizzas or pastas with weekly Sicilian and Turkish theme nights. The Jasmine patisserie serves breakfast and delicious pastries and ice creams. You can round the evening off with a quiet drink at the piano bar or more energetically at the Apollonian disco bar. In early and late season, Kalkan is an enjoyable stroll away or you can take one of the plentiful taxis. The best way to go is by the hotels water taxi, which shuttles to and fro on demand during the morning, late afternoon and evening for just over £1 per person each way. Surely there is no better or more beautiful way to arrive there than by sea.
More about the apartment
Our apartment is quietly situated at the top of the resort. Convenient for the Infinity pool, clubhouse bar, kids club, tennis courts and mini-market. It is connected to the rest of the facilities via the free shuttle bus which winds it way in between the villas on the resorts cobbled road on demand. We enjoy it as a retreat for two and have priced it for a couple staying, although we can accommodate a 3rd person (adult or child over 5) on the full size trundle bed in the lounge. The bedroom is at the rear of the apartment, has a king sized bed, ample storage and a safe. the lounge has two ottaman style sofas, satellite TV & DVD (TV reception limited due to local mountains), and a selection of travel books, maps and novels to curl up with. Through the french doors of the lounge youll find the terrace, which is always in the shade. This a godsend in the heat of high summer when temperatures can be in excess of 40 degrees and is always pleasant spot to relax with its views across the gardens towards the sea and Kalkan. The kitchenette area has a mini-oven, microwave, fridge and everything needed to rustle up a snack meal. The table with four chairs can be used either inside or out. There’s also a hairdryer, safe, iron & ironing board and continental airer. As in many turkish apartments, the shower room is compact. Towels for use within the apartment are provided - (Please bring your own towels for use in the pool or at the beach). The kitchenette area has a mini-oven, microwave, fridge and everything needed to rustle up a snack meal. The table with four chairs can be used either inside or out. Travel cots and other baby equipment can be hired locally - please ask for further details.
Like Kalkan itself, the resort is built directly into the steep hillside so be prepared for inclines and steps. Access to the apartment is up and down two short series of steps, but level access is possible through the french doors for pushchairs. We are in our seventies ourselves and although we wouldnt recommend the resort for those with mobility problems, it is certainly very suitable for “the elderly” as Villarenters put it! As the apartment has an 'open' patio we suggest it is suitable for either families with young babies (we can hire travel cot on your behalf for small extra charge) or older, sensible children. A third person (adult or child) can sleep on the comfortable sofabed in the lounge for which we provide sheet sleeping bags (extra charge for laundering, see below). Our maid will visit to change the sheets and the towels and do a quick clean of the floor areas once every 3-4 days dependent on the length of the booking.
Yet more to see and do
The nearest beaches are a small pebble town beach at Kalkan or the shingle and sand Kaputas beach. The latter has a wonderful setting at the foot of a gorge down a long flight of steps and is featured on many tourist brochures for Turkey. It idyllic and unspoilt – no buildings on site. It is just 10 minutes by dolmus, which stops outside the top gate of Patara Prince, just a few minutes walk from the apt. For a sandy beach, you cant beat Patara which is 18 kilometers long and often voted as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. This is easily accessible via dolmus from central Kalkan as is the much acclaimed beach at Olu Deniz – change buses at Fethiye.
On land, theres so much to see and explore in the beautiful countryside surrounding Kalkan. You can either take an organised excursion, hire a car or use the extensive dolmus network. We enjoy taking the bus from the top of the resort east towards Kas, a drive of breathtaking beauty for just a few lira. Kas is a lively traditional seaside town and resort. Built on the ancient city of Antiphellos its roman amphitheatre enjoys a simply stunning location with views across the sea to the greek island of Meis. You can take a boat to Meis for a daytrip for around £16 return or a glass bottom boat to be amazed by Kekovas sunken ruins. Xanthos the grandest city of ancient Lycia and is easily accessible via the Fethiye-bound bus. Take an organised tour viist the fortress-topped acropolis of Tlos on its rocky outcrop and the18 kilometer long Saklikent Gorge. Here you can enjoy refreshingly cool air mountain air and a wonderful meal at a fresh trout restaurant. More trout restaurants can be found at the village of Isalamar, just 20 minutes from Kalkan, and a real taste of rural Turkish life. At either end of Patara beach youll find more ruins: the cities are Patara and Letoon are scattered romatically here. Whilst from Pinaras hundreds of rock-cut tombs you can enjoy a sense of splendid isolation as well as uninterrupted views across the Akadagi valley. There are many more places to visit.. a week or two may not be enough, but do contact us for further ideas and directions.
Visit from mid-June to mid-September to find all Resort facilities open and to enjoy long lazy days in the sun with temperatures seldom below 30 degrees c.
