Velez Blanco
Nestling at the foot of a rocky outcrop, is the small whitewashed village of Vélez Blanco, 6km north of its neighbour, Velez Rubio.
On top of the hill is a stunning Renaissance castle an extension of the original Moorish alcazaba, which was built by the Marquises of Vélez Blanco in the early 16th century. The village it´s self has a wealth of spanish features along with bars, restaurants, shops & a weekly market.
To the north of the town are the the UNESCO World Heritage listed pre-historic caves and paintings La Cueva del Gabar and Cueva de Los Letreros (Leters Cave) north of Velez Rubio.
Also worth seeing is the 16th century Convento de San Luís, located at the opposite end of town and also built by the Vélez family, although its fine chapel was damaged during the Civil War.
The natural park of Loz Velez in Maria is only a 15mins drive

Beautiful crisp sandy beaches with clear waters at Aguilas is a 40 mins drive.
Mini-Hollywood, Almería, where some of the greatest spaghetti westerns were made, including A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, etc, this is only a 55 mins drive.
The city of Granada is only 1hr 30 mins drive which offers superb shopping architecture & the famous Alhambra Palace. A recommended day out.
Or for the energetic a drive to The Sierra Nevada, Granada which has 61km of ski slopes with 45 pistes and 6 off-piste routes.
