Kandy is worth visiting: the climate is better than the rest of Sri Lanka, and it makes a reasonable centre for visiting the main historic and cultural sites. Do be aware that Dambulla, Anurhadapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya are all about three hours-plus distant by road, and be picky about the vehicles and drivers you use. My husband complained that he saw little or nothing of Sri Lanka because at almost 2 metres in height his views were obstructed by low ceilinged passenger vans.

Sri Lanka is much more charming than India, but the security situation is not resolved. Although there's no hostility towards tourists, there is a real risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But the historic sites are tremendous and well worth seeing.
