Staying in Lismore, a tour of the Castle gardens is a must. The people whom we met in this quiet little town were all very friendly and helpful, there is a very well-stocked supermarket and a variety of other shops (baker, butcher, etc) which made our self-catering holiday a great success.

To many thing closed. Not able to visit inside the castle. Opening part of the castle would bring in more tourist.. may put back life in Lismore.

Lismore is a town that is historically enchanting. Its recorded history goes back to 636 AD when St. Carthage founded a monastry there. There is a castle and a cathedral. Sir Walter Raleigh lived here and the Scientist Robert Boyle was born there. The castle is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. There is a natural spring to the side of the castle where you can fill up your water bottles if you so wish. The town itself is quite small and very rural and probably looks the same as it did a hundred years ago. Foley's on the Mall is an excellent place to have a meal as is Eamonn's Bar. Best steaks in town although he likes to cook them quite well done!!! The Rustic Cafe' is the place to go for a hot chocolate and home made cake plus plenty of 'crack' with the assistants there. We visited the Heritage Centre on a wet and windy Thursday and we were hugely impressed with the "Lismore Experience" which was an audio-visual masterpiece. The Centre itself has a Craft Shop which gave a new meaning to the phrase "retail therapy" Everyone we met in the town greeted us with "and how are ye today?" even youngsters! It was such a pleasure to get away from the hustle and bustle of large towns and shopping malls and walk along a street with shops and bars that seemed to have stood still in time. Lismore is central for visiting Waterford, Kinsale, Cork, Cobh and of course Jamesons Distillery in Midleton (which is a must on any itinerary. Driving was a pleasure and the countryside exceptional. I could go on and on and on about Lismore and the surrounding area but to sum it up:
Lismore, Lismore you stole my heart
Lismore, Lismore we had to part
Lismore, Lismore a place so fine
Lismore, Lismore wish you were mine.

Lismore is a lovely small village. The historic castle gardens were amazing, although you were not allowed inside the castle due to it being occupied. The cathedral is spendid and the village was clean and spotless. The people were very nice and friendly. For a small place it had a few pubs and the classroom was very good with traditional live Irish music on a Thursday night and the Hotel providing live music on the Saturday. It had some good golf courses nearby and was about half an hour from Dungarven (Gold Coast) and Youghal for those fun days out on the beach and to do some shopping. In easy reach of Cork and Waterford. Lismore is the place to stay if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of seaside towns but with a bit of life to it.
