The area around Matera is full of history. From the abandoned Sassi, to Grumentum the last stop for Hannible after his epic defeat of the Romans. The beaches are beautiful. Lovely safe clean sandy ones in Basilicata itself to the rugged coastline of Calabria a few miles down the main highway. The hilltop towns have to be seen to be believed. Perching at precarious angles like limpets to the hills that litter the countryside. Definately a destination for the more discerning traveller. No fish and chip or football bars here. The food is inexpensive, fresh, local produce. The area is covered in fields of olives, oranges groves, vegetables and fruit. The countryside is stunning.
