Travel Guides: All Countries / Central America / Mexico / Playa del Carmen

Destination Guide : Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen
Who go to Playa del Carmen?
Thirty miles south of the massive resort of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is a former fishing village now developing into a medium-sized resort on Mexico's stunning 120-mile stretch of fabulous beaches better known as the Riviera Maya.

Primarily a beach resort, it's a relaxed destination that takes full advantage of the staggeringly clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. There are plentiful water sports, restaurants and bars, night clubs and shops.

How much will it cost?
Seven nights all-inclusive at the Riu Tequila hotel, just south of the resort, starts from £275 per person. A week in the opulent Occidental Royal Hideaway starts from £2,000 based on two sharing.

The nearest airport is in Cancun, about 35 miles away. Return flights from London start from as little as £255 in December with Britannia Airways.

When should I go?
To avoid the hurricane season, don't book between August and October. The rainy season lasts from May to October with the resort's high season between November and February.

Another reason for visiting during the high season is the presence of several migrating species of birds from northern USA and Canada for the warm weather.

Who's it for?
Predominantly for young travellers in their 20s and early 30s, Playa del Carmen attracts an intriguing mix of backpackers, archaeology buffs and New Age sun-worshippers.

What are the must-sees?
The white beaches are some of the best on the planet, bordered by some of the world's clearest water.

If you tire of bronzing, posing or indulging in the plentiful water sports on offer, take the short day trip to visit the Mayan ruins nestled in the jungle at Coba or overlooking the Caribbean at Tulum. There's also some natural aquariums at Xel-Ha.

What will I spend?
Prices vary greatly, but as a rough guide: a glass of beer £1, roll of 24-exposure film £4, moderate restaurant meal for two £25-£30, litre of petrol 30p, short taxi ride £2.
