Zaton is an idyllic location - a large almost circular bay with hills beyond and clear blue water. There were three restaurants in the village - we tried them all and they were all excellent. There is a bakery and tobacco kiosk in the village and a supermarket in the next village - a lovely 20 minute walk along a coastal path. There is a also a post office and information office who were very helpful. The bus stop is nearby and buses to Dubrovnik leave around once an hour. The journey takes about 20 minutes, costs 14 Kns and you can get a timetable from the information office. There is also a boat once a day leaving at 9:00 and returning at 6:00pm which is little more expensive. You can spend a great day on a 3 - island tour to the beautiful Elaphiti islands, leaving from the village. It costs 250 Kunars (around £40) which includes a choice of lunches eaten on the boat ( the fresh hake was delicious) .and as much soft drinks and wine as you want! The boat departs from Zaton around 10:00 am and returns you around 6:00pm giving 3 hours on one island and an hour on the other two - plenty of time for a swim and a wander about. If you want to exlore the other Dalmation islands then you need to get the bus to Dubrovnik and then a ferry from the main port - only a few minutes walk from the bus station. Be sure to get the ferry timetables from the information office in advance as many trips only depart once a day - and not necessarily every day. All in all a beautiful location for a relaxing holiday.

Zaton Veliki or "big" Zaton is tucked away into a beautiful bay close to Dubrovnik. There is a wonderful walking path all around the end of the bay to Zaton Mali or "small" Zaton. There are beautiful scenic paths through the evergreen forests down to the rocky seashore. The views are spectacular. There are also plenty of places to enter the water off the rocks, docks, ramps or ladders. There was a great pizza place on the roof where we watched the full moon coming up. It was enchanting. I would recommend it to families or newlyweds. The townspeople were very friendly and most spoke some English. We felt well taken care of.

Zaton Bay is a beautiful inlet close to Dubrovnik, unspoiled by high rise hotels and the excesses of the tourist industry.
Zaton Veliki has four restaurants. One that specialises in fish, two that have more general fare and a pizza place. There is a kiosk that sells bread, milk, butter and juice that is open late. A stall selling local produce is open in the mornings. There is also a newsstand selling papers and cigarettes and a post office. The nearest supermarket (a choice of two) is in Zaton Mali, about 20 minutes walk around the bay.
There are lovely walks in the hills behind Zaton leading to hidden coves and stunning views.
Dubrovnik is a short bus ride away. The fare is HK14. the bus takes you to the bus station in the new part of Dubrovnik, close to a good selection of shops and supermarkets. From here you can take a city bus (HK10 for an hours travel - HK8 if you buy your ticket beforehand, even cheaper if you buy in bulk) to the old town. You can walk it, it takes about 30 minutes, 20 minutes uphill then 10 minutes down.
You can also go by boat, it leaves at 9.00 from the quay, you can't miss it, it's pink! It returns at about 6.00. The fare is HK25 one way, HK40 return. It drops you beside the Hotel Lapad. It is about a 10 minute walk to the bus station, shops etc. Alternatively you can pick up a number 6 bus which eventually takes you into the old town after a tour of some of the Dubrovnik hotels.
Dubrovnik old town is a must see. It gets very crowded so go early. There is self guided audio tour that starts at 8.00. If you get one of the early buses from Zaton you can have a relaxing coffee, do the tour and be back for sunbathing by lunchtime!
The water in Zaton is clear and warm, great for swimming and very safe. There are plenty of places to lay out and sunbathe, or you can walk round the headland and find yourself a rock to dive off.
If you are looking for a peaceful relaxing spot in the sun, you can't do better than Zaton!

Only twenty minutes from Dbrovnik, Zaton Veliki offers the perfect antidote to the hectic pace of 21st century living. If you are looking for peace, tranquility, great views and good restaurants then Zaton Veliki is the ideal retreat. The location is idyllic with perfect views across the bay and, if you are prepared to walk 10 minutes around the headland, some stunning views across to the islands which lie just off the coast. There is also an easy coastal footpath around to Zaton Mali. The waters of the Adriatic are very clear and there are lots of little rocky coves in which to sunbathe or swim. In the summer you can also hire canoes.
There are several excellent restaurants in Zaton Veliki although, apart from the main bar/restaurant in the village square, they are closed from the end of Oxtober until March. The Konoba Kasar just past the church has a fantastic fish menu: we actually saw our fish being brought off the boat and then cooked on the barbeque. The main bar/restaurant in the village also does good fish and outstanding steaks. The average price of main courses tends to be about 100 kuna although expect to pay a little more for fish. Local wine/beer is cheap but you will pay a lot more if you want to order anything other than the local wine.
There is a three island cruise on the M/S Zvir which goes from the harbour in Zaton Veliki every day. The cost is 220 Kuna for a full day which includes lunch on board; we would recommend this to anyone who visits. The supermarket in Zaton Veliki has now closed but there are two in the neighbouring village of Zaton Mali and both can be reached by a 20/25 minute walk along the coastal footpath which is very easy going; fresh bread, milk, juices, water etc are available from the village square in Veliki from 7.00 am until 8.00 pm every day.
Driving up through the village in a large car can be tricky as the roads are narrow so it may be better to park in the square and walk round. The bus service to Dbrovnik (No 12) runs 5/6 times a day and takes you to the old bus station from where it is a 20 minute walk/5 minute bus ride to the old town. If you don't have a car and are arriving from the airport, it costs about 350 Kuna with tip.

Zaton Veliki - A stunning village about half an hour from Dubrovnik. Beautiful azure sea with shady pine woods on the hills. The beach is pebbly and the sea so clear that you can see the fish swimming around! The locals are friendly and there are three restaurants, two of them serving truly fantastic seafood. There is also a kiosk selling fresh bread, pastries, milk and soft drinks, and another selling postcards etc. There is a boat which will take you to Dubrovnik in the morning and returns in the late afternoon - this is great as parking in Dubrovnik is difficult. The same boat service also offer a tour of three nearby islands. All in all a peaceful and relaxing location with restaurants a few minutes apart and easy to get to Dubrovnik should you wish to.
