| | | Elegance and adventure | | Why go to Agadir? For sun and sand in a modern city setting, with elegant four and five-star hotels along a vast expanse of protected beach.
Agadir exists for tourism but a thriving fishing port gives it an authentic touch. If you are hoping for the exoticism of Marrakech, you won't find it here.
Walkers and adventurers can explore the High Atlas mountains a two-hour drive from Agadir or go south to the Western Sahara. Sporty types can practice their game on clay tennis courts or go horse riding.
How much will it cost? A seven-night B&B break in a five-star hotel costs from about £610 in low season. Return flights to Agadir start from about £200 during the same period.
When should I go? Morocco's rainy season is from November to January but visits are possible as late as April. June to September are the hottest months. Daily highs can reach 36C/97F in July and August.
Who's it for? Families and couples who want a beach break in a destination with elegant modern conveniences, low-key nightlife and enough sightseeing to fill a week or two. Agadir is quite a pricey destination so be prepared to pay more for eating and drinking out than you would in other Moroccan cities.
What are the must-sees? Agadir's main attraction is its immaculate fine sand beach, lapped by waters that stay calm all year round. Jetskis, pedalos, surfboard and watersports are available along the bay.
Bird-lovers can see pink flamingos, ibis, doves and herons at the tranquil Souss Massa Nature Reserve. For a great view walk up to the ruins of the kasbah (citadel), or take a camel ride in the desert.
Try a half-day tour to the ancient oasis town of Taroudannt or for a full day out, visit lovely coastal town Essaouira further north. It's favoured by artists for its light and is full of fascinating traditional architecture, winding alleys, souks and shops. Jim Morrison, iconographic lead singer of The Doors, also loved staying there.
What will I spend? Prices vary greatly, but as a rough guide: litre of petrol 50p, 4-mile taxi ride about £2, bottle of beer £1, moderately priced restaurant meal with wine £10, 24-exposure camera film £1.50.
