Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Balearic Islands / Mallorca / Alcudia

Destination Guide : Alcudia

Former Roman settlement
Why go on holiday to Alcudia?
Alcudia sits astride a beautiful bay on the north of Majorca, with a superb, safe beach and an excellent variety of watersports and activities, plus a lively (though not outrageous) nightlife.

It's not just a beach-worshippers' paradise, there's culture around, too - in the form of the old town of Alcudia, once a Roman settlement.

How much does it cost?
As a rough guide, a week's self-catering in June is from £300, seven nights half-board in a decent hotel at the same time of year is from £500. Flights start at about £130 return. Mid-range accommodation (double) starts from £35 per night.

When should I go?
May-June and September-October are best to avoid the crowds and higher prices of July and August. Visit in spring for the flowers in the mountainous north-west of the islands.

In summer, temperatures average 70-88F (23-30C) and in winter drop to 43-58F (6-15C).

Excellent beach
What should I do when I'm there?
Enjoy the beach; either reclining on it or participating in watersports. Let your hair down in the evenings. Visit Alcudia's old town.

What's the beach like?
Almost nine miles long, the white sand beach is the longest and one of the finest on the island. It slopes gently into the shallow sea, so is suitable for small children. A tree-shaded walkway runs along much of the beach's length.

Where do I go for culture?
Alcudia's old town is just a short bus ride away from the resort. It's an old, walled district fortified by medieval gates with a fascinating museum of Roman antiquities.

What activities can I do?
Alcudia's a great place for watersports. Activities range from windsurfing, paragliding, jetskiiing and waterskiing (although you could chicken out and just rent a pedalo!). Other activities include boat trips, multi-sport clubs, tennis and squash.

Bustling local market
Where's good for nightlife?
Nightlife in Alcudia is centred on the port and near the crossroads. There are plenty of bars and discos, although it's not the liveliest scene on the island. Clubbers could try Menta, an energy-charged disco right by the harbour.

What's the food like?
Majorcan specialities include lechona (roast suckling pig), roast lamb, arroz brut (a meat, fish and vegetable stew with rice), and snails with ali-oli (a garlic mayonnaise).

Not surprisingly, fresh seafood features prominently on local menus, including grilled sardines.

What should I buy?
The bustling market in Alcudia takes place on Tuesday and Sunday mornings. Local handicrafts include pottery, olive wood carvings, raffia, glassware and handmade lace.

What is there for children to do?
Alcudia's gently sloping shore offers safe, child-friendly bathing. For a livelier excursion, there's a large water park on the edge of town.

Some resort hotels offer good children's facilities - including childrens' clubs and pools - but you will need to check with your hotel/tour operator.
