Here these natural baths that have been of interest since Roman times have waters varying in temperature from 30 to 45 degrees. There are also numerous natural parks dotted around. One of particular interest is the Cabo Del Gato Nijar east of Almeria. This arid landscape receives less than 200mm of rain a year, but still manages to maintain an environment full of life. There are also many picturesque villages hidden amongst the rocks and coves of the countryside.
Almeria is the capital city of the region and is a historical and cultural town. Here you can visit the Alcazaba Castle which overlooks the modern city. The city has a number of small museums and makes for an interesting day out.
Often understated in tourist guides is the fishing port of Adra. This beautiful old town is situated just off the costal motorway and is worth a day trip. You will find a fantastic old castle along with numerous archaeological sites. It is usually a relatively un-crowded place which works to its advantage and makes for a wonderful family trip.
You cannot visit Almeria without visiting the famous ‘troglodytic’ villages or the cave villages. These are whole villages nestled in caves amongst the sandstone cliffs which are still inhabited today. There are cave museums and an example home to explore.
Finally, what would be a visit to Almeria without seeing the famous Tabernas Desert? This is perhaps the only true desert in all of Europe, but that is not what makes it so famous. In fact, this natural reserve has also been the set for many Spaghetti Westerns. There are even some of the film sets from past films, that, although have become rather dilapidated, are rather fun to visit. Wild West shows are also put on for the tourists.
