Travel Reviews : Alora

Review by Jon Hallows from Reading

My only negative comment would be a lack of good restaurants within driving distance

Review by Paul Head from New London, PA, USA

Villa Gareth sits on the steep hills above Malage, flocked by endless olive groves with innumerable whitewashed villages in the distance. This is definitely rural Spain, far removed from the hustle and hype of Barcelona, Madrid, or the crowded Costa del Sol.

Review by Claire Symons from Cramlington

Alora is a beautiful white wash town within the Andulucian hillside. We were about a 5 min drive from the main town. There are trains from Malaga - Alora and takes approx 30 mins. To get to the main town I would recomend using transport due to how steep the road is, but please walk back down and take in this beautiful (unspoilt by tourism) spainsh town where you can hold hands with the your neighbour across the street if you wished. We were staying about a 5 - 10 min walk from the station and from the local train station catch a bus which comes approximately every 1/2hr and cost 1E or a taxi if you are brave enough to use school spanish or have found your dictionary (there is a phone box with a number above the bus sign).

The Mercacado (supermarket open all day) or Maradonna as my Father in law called it I would recomend a Taxi to as bus does not go. Please do not expect this town to be like home Taxi's come when they come and not many speak English so have a dictionary (spanish that is) at hand and try.

As with most towns in Europe nothing comes alive til after 5.30pm and most restaurants at 8.00pm remember the seiesta is from about 1pm-5.30pm

The Chinese (El Chino) restaurant does the most beautiful duck you have ever tasted and the bar next to the train station is fantastic for younger peopl(well we are in our 30's) There is also a great couple of bars on your way out of Alora heading back to Malaga with great food. All the food was a great price and much cheaper than home which is probably why you come back at least 10lbs heavier.

Everyone we met was extremely welcoming and they like kids???? which is great to see no evil looks when your child screams or is out after 9pm with all the other spainsh children in the various parks throughout the town. A great place for the family, I do recomend hireing a car if you fancy a trip to the beach as the train journey is a bit of a faff on well if you have small children however there is an outdoor pool in the town for those of you who don't have a villa with one. El Choro (which is though of as the Spanish lake district) is only 8km from town centre.

So whether you just want to relax watching the breathtaking sunsets over the moorish castle or be adrenalin fuled through moutain biking, Alora truely makes you want to explore more of the real spain. Viva Espana
