Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Costa Brava - Girona / Blanes

Destination Guide : Blanes

No rain in Blanes
Why go?
For a beach holiday in the sun in a modern fishing town that thrives on tourism. Blanes panders less to the British market than nearby Lloret de Mar, so there's more of a Mediterranean feel to this resort. Self-catering apartments are in purpose-built complexes of the type found anywhere along the Spanish costas. The Costa Brava also has some of the best scuba diving that Spain has to offer.

How much will it cost?
A week's self-catering package starts at about £270 in low season. Return budget airline flights to Gerona airport, about 50 minutes' drive from Blanes, start at about £40 during the same period.

When should I go?
This is a year-round destination. May, June and September are the ideal months if you want to avoid the summer crowds and extreme heat. Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in winter to 29C (84F) in summer.

Who's it for?
Families, mature travellers and couples wanting a reasonably quiet holiday in a town used to seeing lots of British holidaymakers that offers enough to do and see in a week. Nature lovers will appreciate the town's botanical gardens and sun worshippers can laze on more than two miles of coarse sand and pebble beaches nearby.

What are the must-sees?
Stroll up Mt Sant Joan to see views of Blanes and the Costa Brava from a 12th-century Romanesque chapel called Santa Barbara, and the Sant Joan tower.

If you visit in July don't miss the Festa Major. The spectacular International Costa Brava Fireworks Contest is held during the week and Blanes competes for a trophy. If you don't arrive in time, more festivals are staged throughout the year.

The beautifully landscaped Mar I Murtra and Pinya de Rosa botanical gardens are planted with thousands of cacti, sub-tropical and tropical species and promise a few hours of calm and quiet.

Visit the Passeig del Mar market on Monday mornings to shop for clothes, souvenirs and other knick-knacks. Shoppers can browse more than 650 stores in Blanes.

What will I spend?
Prices vary greatly, but as a rough guide a bottle of beer is about 80p, a 24-exposure camera film £2.50, a three-course meal for one with wine £9, a bottle of wine from about £2.50, a litre of petrol 45p, short taxi ride £2-£3.
