Review by Paul Akeroyd from Claygate
The charming village of Burgau is the jewel in the crown of the unspoilt west Algarve. White stone houses cluster together on the hillside above the bay which features a safe sandy beach at one end, and slipway for fishing boats at the other.
Narrow streets bustle with the rhythms of a working fishing village, producing a holiday atmosphere with a local flavour: a welcome change from other centres where tourists dominate. There are of course plenty of holidaymakers, particularly in evidence on the beech, and in the many and varied restaurants in the village. The latter range from snack bars through to superb-quality restaurants specialising in locally produced meat and fresh fish dishes, and even along the way featuring such "traditional" British favourites as a pizzeria and Indian restaurant! Despite the activity, the nature of Burgau as a family resort ensures it remains quiet enough at night to ensure you get a good night's sleep!
Burgau is ideally positioned to enable you to explore the many beautiful beaches to the west, including the grandeur of the Atlantic coast whose magnificent waves provide a huge draw for surfers. The larger, cosmopolitan port of Lagos a few miles to the east boasts more sophisticated attractions and nightlife, whilst by way of contrast, a 45 minute drive into the Monchique mountains to the north offers peace and tranquility amongst beautiful scenery with views of the ocean, glistening in the distance. Quality golf courses abound, and water sports, tennis and horse riding are available locally.

Perfect in every way.

Burgau has all the charm of an authentic, rustic, Mediterranean fishing village. The narrow cobbled streets, white washed buildings and stunning cliff top walks made us feel truly off the beaten tourist track. Yet the friendly locals never made us feel anything but welcome visitors in their village. Even though the apartment has everything you would need for home cooking, the tempting range of restaurants meant we ate out every night. Among our favourites were The Beach Bar, for its stunning views and Dom Dinis for its charm and varied menu. The white, sandy beach surrounded by the dramatic cliff face is one of the best beaches we have been to in the Mediterranean. Burgau in its self has everything a young couple or a family could wish for as a holiday destination. we did explore abit further by hiring a car and visiting Sagres with its incredible beach, Lagos for its unforgettable dolphin watching experience, Cape St Vicent for its breath taking views as well as stopping at many beautiful beaches along the way. In short it was a fantastic holiday and we will certainly be back very soon. Thanks again, Marcus and Jo, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.

I thought Burgau would be very portuguese, but in fact it was very british which was disappointing. The coastal walks to Luz and particularly Saleema are breathtaking and I would thoroughly recommend them. The restaurants are very good. The local people are very nice.

Burgau is the perfect family destination. It is full of friendly bars and authentic Portuguese restaurants allowing you to have a great night out. The beach is small but beautiful and uncrowded. with its beach bar in one corner serving you tasty food and snacks from lunch right through 'til bedtime. Avoid Jimmy's if you want to sample the real Algarve and instead head for the restaurant Matias and the bar Burgau Verandahs for drinks overlooking the sea and live entertainment. Do some souvenir shopping in the English owned Sardine Factory and get to know the locals and buy the best fruit and veg at the daily market opposite the bus stop.
Burgau is perfectly situated on the western Algarve with the city of Largos and it's bohemian atmosphere a mere 10 minute drive away and the large unspoilt beaches of Carrepeterria and Sargres in the opposite direction.
A great place to stay, thoroughly recommnended.

Burgau is a great little fishing village, but has enough to keep you entertained. Our party consisted of 2 familys of four, both with 2 children ranging in age from 10 to 13. We were not sure if there would be enough to do in the evening for the children, but to be honest they were quiet happy to play pool and football table soccer in the local club and bars, or just sit and enjoy being on holiday. There are numerous restaurants in Burgau and the surrounding areas to enable you to eat in a different place each day (14 days). The beach at Burgau is very very safe for children and has a great beach bar. Cafe Rui is a great place for beers when leaving the beach or to even go in the evening (but they serve no food). The locals in Burgau make you very welcome, and I would recommend this resort to any family and couples alike. Don't go to Burgau if you are looking for a roudy 18-30 holiday as this is not the place for you. A quiet unspoilt fishing village to relax and unwind.

If you do visit Burgau, DO NOT take your car to the bottom of the hill. Park at the top and walk down. The beach road exiting from the bottom of the hill is hazardous, particularly at high tide.

This is a lovely part of the Algarve (Burgau), a lot quieter than Albuferira. Burgau has a lovely beach, even though it is small, it is kept clean, and very good for sufing. There is a restaurant on the beach which is well worth a visit, not just for the food and drink but for the view. There is a lovely cliff walk from Burgau to Praia De Luz, which is a must if you enjoy a walk, this will take about an hour and the views are specatular over the sea. The area is quiet, but that was probably because we went late March, not suitable for teenagers as there wouldn't be anything for them to do.There is building work going on in the area, but this didn't affect our holiday as we couldn't hear much noise. Overall, the area was just what we were looking for, scenic, good weather, lovely restaurants, quiet and relaxing. We will definitely return.

Burgau has to be the most beautiful place ever, unspoilt, with friendly locals and plenty of places to both eat and drink within the village itself.
Great for families it has a lovely clean sandy beach with no noisy water sports just great swimming and the occasional scuba diver.
Perfect location as close to all the attractions the Algarve has to offer Lagos, West Coast (surfing), Monchique, Golf, Water Parks and many others.
