Travel Reviews : Calis Beach

Review by Janet Smith from Rotherham

Ideally located for visits to places like fethiye, Hisaronu and Olu Deniz but not as developed as those places and all the better for that. Equaly is sufficiently developed for you to stay within Calis and not have to look further afield

Review by John Hanson from Catherine De Barnes, Solihull, Warks

Calis Beach is very close to the town of Fethiye. It has many activitiy oppotunities like a water park for the family, Para-Gliding, Para-Sailing, Powered Micro-lights, Jeep safaris, Scuba diving...and when youve finished all of that and more there is the traditional Turkish massage to ease your aching bones!

Eating out is a pleasure not only for the delicious food which is always prepared and cooked fresh with every order, but also for the fact that eating out can be so very cheap.

If you pay for a small snack at the beach restaurants then you can usually use their sunbeds and parasols for the day for free...You can just raise your hand and give your fresh orders to the restaurant staff will bring you your cold drinks or more snacks without you getting up!

Calis Beach area in general is unspoilt by crowds, not at all noisey at night and has quite the friendliest local people I have ever met at a holiday resort.

I had my hire car towed off the beach by a local Turkish man in his 4x4 after I got my wheels stuck in the sand. He then escorted me approximately 7 miles to my destination and gave me a cheery wave before driving away. He would accept no money and spoke no English. This kind action is by no means unique by Turkish standards and I have been made to feel quite humble by the every day kind gestures bestowed on me and my family by the local people. I would not hesitate to reccommend this holiday destination to families, couples, hiking or sporting types. Food and entertainement is cheap but there are no Ibiza type night clubs.

Calis Beach is unspoilt by cutting edge developement and building sites and any building work is carried out after the tourist season has ended. A superb value holiday destination.

Review by Jenny Parkin from Southampton

Well this was our 5th holiday to Calis Beach and once again we enjoyed every minute and were sad to leave. The Turkish people are always so friendly and make us feel so welcome everywhere we go. Calis beach is a mix of sand and shingle with ample space to relax and sunbathe, sunbeds and umbrellas are available to hire at a minimal cost. If you get peckish whilst improving your tan, the Pieman will sell you his ware as he walks the beach all day selling apple pies, cheese pies etc. If you have had enough sun there are many restaurants along the promonade where one can enjoy anything from freshly squeezed orange juice or an ice cold beer, to mezes or a full blown meal, with many varied cuisines from traditional Turkish to chinese. In the early evening wherever you are on Calis beach, you have to stop to watch the magical sunset as it disappears over the islands at the far end of the bay..stunning.

If you like to get out and about as we do and see the surrounding resorts without hiring a car, the Dolmus buses (like minibuses) run every few minutes down the main street in Calis and these will take you to Fethiye, Hisouranu or Olu Deniz, alternatively, you can hop on a water taxi which will take you across the bay to Fethiye in 1/2 an hour and run every 1/2 an hour (except Tuesdays which is market day in Fethiye, they run every 10 minutes! Buy fresh fish at the market and have it cooked for you in any one of the restaurants surrounding the marketplace - fantastic - we had prawns and sea bass.) Excursions can be booked easily in Calis. If you hire a car, the surrounding countryside is wonderful with beautiful scenery eg. mountains behind Calis, the Dalyan river and Kournos lake about 1- 1 1/4hrs drive from the resort with many Lycian archeological sites to visit on route.

All in all Calis is a lovely holiday destination for all age groups, very relaxing or as lively as you choose. We look forward to returning once again soon!

Review by Carol sanderson from Manchester

Calis beach is very nice and clean. It is a bit pebbley but that doesnt spoil it. You can walk for miles along the beach and see stuning scenery and a gorgeous sunset. Restaurants, nightlife and the market were all adequate for us and Calis is a great location for Fethiye, Olu Deniz and Hisaronu. Cant wait to return next year.

Review by Elaine Creed from Guernsey

Excellent pedestrian beachfront resort numerous restaurents offering excellent value, very friendly and helpfull

staff. lovely and pecfull and quiet for those requiring a relaxing holiday.

Review by Ros Hall from Huddersfield

Calis Beach is a small resort with a long promenade lined with restaurants and one main street with shops and restaurants, but little else. There was some nightlife but it's more for families and older people. The beach is pebbly but nice and quiet with sunbeds. The beach bar at one end provides sunbeds and bean bags free of charge if you use their bar and the staff were all really friendly and helpful. Most of the restaurants were good and there was a variety of food to suit all tastes. The location of Calis is good for getting to other places such as Olu Deniz, Hisaronu and Fethiye. The water taxi to Fethiye is a fun way to do it but there are frequent buses everywhere and bike hire available. There are some good shops in Fethiye, especially for silver and other jewellery, and the fish market is a must, as well as a visit to the old quarter. We encountered nothing but helpfulness from everyone. The Turks certainly know how to make you feel welcome!

Review by Eric Boulden from Abu Dhabi

As we were villa hunting the area was a good base for exploring the surrounding areas.

Review by claudia henry from london

Calis beach is not too crowded but is still lively. It has a good selection of restaurants and although shingle in some spots you can also find sandy areas. All in all a family friendly enjoyable place to holiday.

Review by Andrew Kewley from Leeds

Calis Beach is a busy resort with a long stretch of bars and restaurants along the sea front. Every restaurant is in competition with each other. It is impossible to enjoy a leisurely strool along the promonade as you are stopped at every restaurant and the waiters try and drag you in to look at their menus. We found this quite irritating at first. The best thing we found was to say we were meeting friends further down. The restaurants we did dine in were very good. The waiters were very friendly and always made a big fuss of the kids. Some Restaurants had special offers on so it was worth looking around. The beach itself wasn't very good. Not sand but a kind of grey shingle mixed in with cigarette ends and rusty beer bottle tops. No one cleaned the beach or the footpaths and people just threw their rubbish on the floor. There were plenty of stray dogs and lots of dog excrement on the footpaths. It was a shame as the place itself is very picturesque especially round the bridge area where you get the water taxis from. The sunsets are spectacular. there didn't seem to be alot of night time live entertainment. The bars where they had occasional belly dancers and other dance acts were always crowded. Fethiye was worth a visit. We went to the old town and had a meal at the Duck Pond which was excellent and the meal for the four of us with drinks came to about £30. We would come again but probably out of season when it was cooler and less busy.

Review by Sue Warner from Wivenhoe

A beautiful beach with easy access for the children. Approached by lots of locals trying to sell their wares but all were polite and moved on when we said no thank you. Bars very friendly and super lunches.

Review by linda nend from worcester

Though Calis Beach was a beautiful destination. Very friendly people, plenty of restaurants serving a variety of dishes. Shops were a plenty and very reasonably priced. Able to book excursions easily enough. If you are hiring a car, then driving is easy enough, most places of interest are accessable. Children particularly enjoyed the water park and Saklient where they took part in 'fun tubing' down the river and a mud bath after. All very reasonably priced and enjoyable. Local buses are easy to jump on and off and will take you to most destinations and also weekly markets are definately worth a visit.

Yet again I want to rave about what a fantastic time we all had at Annirozi, Seaside, Calis. Thank you Lorraine & Larry, for your generousity in allowing us to spend time in your wonderful home. We spent the most relaxing two weeks in fabulous accommodation & surroundings.  Calis is a beautiful part of the world & we would recommend both it & this villa to anyone who wishes to visit this part of the world.  The complex is wonderful, clean, and welcoming.  As is of course the villa.  Calis, never changes, its residents remember you from years gone by.  Thank you to Jack at Georges, for making our stay yet again so enjoyable. He can always help out, or can always find someone who can.  He even managed to get some dilute pop flown out from England for us as we forgot to take it with us for Reanna & had difficulty getting any.  To all at Kum City, for laying on a beautiful birthday meal on the beach for Craig, their service was second to none.  To all the  management at Seaside for all their help if we had a problem. To Tulay (boat no:5) for 2 of the most fantastic days out on the 12 Island tour.  He even hand delivered some photos to us that he had taken of Reanna on our days out.  His cooking (& his wifes!! Fredidre I think) is fantastic. His smile captivating.  He cannot do enough for you. To all the staff at the Duck Pond in Fethiye, who like everywhere else we went took to Reanna as if she was the only little girl in the world.  To Carole & Tayfun for a wonderful Sunset Cruise.  To all these people and many many more, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for making our 2 weeks in paradise exactly that.......PARADISE.

(The only downfall to the whole holiday is that we had to come home. :-(  )
To anyone who is thinking of going to Calis I wholeheartedly recommend the place & this Villa.
Thank you again to everyone who made our  family holiday as wonderful as it was.

A stunning part of Turkey, with breath taking sunsets, lovely beach, great resturants and livley at nights but also with an area 10 mins behind the main beach front is an area where you dont here any noise and the people are growing there one veg in gardens, taking there bulls to the river & living the real Turkish life.

The best location..its all there if you want it from tradition to night life....a must.

the boat trips are good and the water taxi into Fetya is very relaxing We visted the water park this year a good day out also the local Sunday market is very popular for bargains, Taxi drivers will take you anywhere and pick you up you can also book them for a day and they will take you sightseeing, you can also book a water taxi with owner and his wife cooks a delicious meal for you while you sail round the islands and fish off the side of the boat and go swimming in the blue clean warm sea

Calis Beach was great. About a 20min walk from the villa, and when you get there, there were many resturants, bars, vendors selling all sorts of interesting things.
The turkish people were the friendliest people ive ever met, they make you feel very welcome.

Review by christine hanley from Aylesbury

Callis shingle beach seems to run for miles making it so easy to find a relaxing place to sunbathe, the beach walk runs just as far with it's local bars and shops.. You won't need a car as the buses and boat taxis are cheep, easy to use and so frequent.

Review by Glenn Sharples from Preston

The unique selling point for Chalis Beach seems to be the sunsets, which are very pretty but once youve seen a couple of them...ho hum.The local restauranters believe that tourists will pay "top-dollar" for the privellege of sitting in one of there establishments and enjoying an evening meal whilst watching the sun go down. From my experience the quality and service in the majority of these places is sadly lacking.

An evening meal was all too often spoilt by terrible service with a waiting time of around 45 mins between courses the norm.Waiters that seemed incapable of getting your order right then expecting you to just eat whatever it was they brought in mistake (I kid you not!!).The food quality was passable but not upto scratch for the prices we paid, and better meals at lower prices where to be had in Fethiye and Hisaronu.

Chalis Beach is a relatively new resort and has the feeling of being not the finished article and requires some adjustment to its outlook. If it is, as it seems to be, trying to pitch itself along side Olu Deniz as a top end resort, fine. The poorer performing restaurants will wither and dro p off the vine given time leaving the ones based on customer satisfaction going from strength to strength, though God knows they are thin on the ground now!

Calis beach is a very relaxing resort we visited at the end of the season so can not speak for any other time of the year. There are sufficient resreraunts and bars. The sunsets as stated are spetacular and well worth seeing. All trips were very good value.

We have now holidayed in Calis for 5 years. There is something about the place that grows on you, on paper it is just another holiday place but when you get there you fall into to its enticing trap & fall in love with the place.

You cant always put your finger on it, why you love it so much, is it the 4km of beach which streaches as far as the eye can see, is it the dazzaling turquise water with a million diamonds glittering on the surface, is it the big smiles of the local Turkish people or is it the beautful blazing sunsets.

There restaurants are plentiful and you can find one to suit mose budgets. There is lots to do, but the best things in life are free - walking along the beach, lapping up the waves, watching the house martins swoop or feeling the wind on your face.

Beautiful sunsets a great location - you should try it sometime.

Review by Diane and Michael Feledziak from Eccleshall Stafford

We found Calis to have a lot of unfinished areas and although a lot of new buildings had been built beautifully the surrounding area seemed unfinished. The main strip of restaurants along Calis Beach were all very well kept and all had a lovely veiw of the sea and we felt the quality of food was good. All the restaurant staff were very friendly.

There were good value boat trips to be had and the horse riding was exceptional value and we had a very enjoyable ride, especially the cantering through the sea (the highlight of the holiday for my daughter!) although I was a little concerned at the lack of quality horse riding hats.

The local water park was very good, although quite small, with only about six slides which were all side by side, and a swimming pool. The staff were great fun and played lots of games with the children. On the down side you cannot take in any food or drink and the food and drink on sale is very expensive.

There are three or four main supermarkets but you would need a car or taxi.

Review by Donna Macdonald from Huntingdon

Calis Beach is an unspoilt resort, that is ideal for a holiday or for a base for exploring the surrounding resorts of Fetiye, Olu Deniz and Hisanoru.  The restaurants delivered first class service and the food is probably the best standard we have had abroad.  The locals are very friendly and there are numerous villas/apartments for hire.  You could easily go out and about with one of the local tour operators or explore yourself by hiring a car or a jeep.  Not the greatest of beaches however many of the villas are a little of the beated track and with it being so hot in Turkey you feel a little reluctant to drag yourself away from the pool and take the walk to the beach.  Calis is yet unspoilt by tourism and there arent loads of hotels, with many of the villas looking like old southern houses it means that it can very picturesque and worth a walk around just to look at the villas themself.  A lovely resort that is well worth a visit and even a return visit!!

Review by Stephen Eddington from Stockton-on-Tees

Although there are quite a few new apartment blocks being built in this area they are low rise and do not appear to impact on the area too much. We found the people of Calis Beach extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful especially with families. Calis is ideally situated to visit other areas of Turkey and is an excellent base to stay in. The area is unspoilt and not too large like other areas of Turkey. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and a selection of shops to choose from which offer excellent value for money. We found the area very safe which is important when you have a family. Calis is renowned for its sunsets and I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed. What better way to end the day than sitting with a drink in one of the restaurants along the front watching the sun go down. We found Calis Beach an excellent place to stay and would certainly recommend it to our friends and family and hope to return soon.

Review by Amanda Clarke from Scunthorpe

Calis Beach is a dream of what being abroad is about. From the sunsets on a palm tree beach to the surrounding mountains the scenery is breathtaking. In and around Calis you get a real feel for turkish life at a laid back place that is also welcoming. There is plenty of affordable choice with restaurants/shops and people wishing to please you.As a family, we felt very safe in Calis and the locals will help anyone with anything. The area is flat and easy to walk around. There's always plenty of taxis/busues to get into towns. A quiet, ralxing place, Calis is as amazing on return hols.

Calis is one of our favourite holiday destinations. Its peaceful and situated in the most picturesque surroundings. Plenty of choice when it comes to eating out and all restaurants are child friendly. We have met some of the friendliest local people ever on our holidays here.

Review by keith morris from manchester

the beach area is a shingle beach no sand anywhere!!! there are plenty of sunbeds and plenty of beach for everyone the sea is warm, we went 2nd week of june and the water was warmer than our pool, there are a huge number of cafe and bars to stop at if the beach gets to hot, there is a nice market on the beach front and in calis its self the water taxi is great value for money, if you want to go to fethiye this takes about 20mins there are a couple of night clubs and lively bars but it is mainly a family oriented resort. food is plentyful and cheap. however if you have children you may find its a bit limited for things for them to do, but there is a small waterpark not far from the sea front where you can spend a fun day out. in the high season there are plenty of watersports including bananna boats rings etc, you can book as many excutions you like from the sea front. the bars usually only close when they have no customers left all in all we had a briliant time our villa was in coca calis and spent nearly everyday in calis apart from the big market in fethiye and a boat trip around the islands. we would highly recomend this as a relaxing family holiday our 8 yr old son can not wait to go back next year

Review by member STRICKLAND from BOURNEMOUTH

Calis beach where there is a large variety of shops, bars, cafes and good restaurants. Staff we encountered were friendly, helpful and attentive. The walk along the unmade roads was enchanting at night as you could here the delightful sounds of a multitude of frogs calling to each other in the stream. The sunset on Calis beach is beautiful and not to be missed. Easy access to Fethiye via water taxi across the bay, again not to be missed. Dolmus buses regular, reliable and cheap, will stop anywhere for you. Car hire not essential as buses go everywhere. All very clean, air conditioned with helpful drivers and run late into the night. A wonderful relaxing holiday in gorgeous surroundings.

Review by Jessica Henderson from Edinburgh

We stayed just outside Calis but went there a number of times for evening meals. Calis was accessible, lively and friendly but like many other popular beach destinations, it was very much focused on catering to tourists rather than offering a truly Turkish experience. Be prepared to be lobbeyed by a stream of waiters lining up to get your custom. That didn't mean we didn't have a nice time but it did mean that we hired a jeep immediately so that we could explore further afield and find some of-the-beaten-track spots.

The Dalmus bus service is excellent - we used it frequently and it's a great way to get around.

Review by member Mistry from Leicester

It has to be one of the most amazing pebble beaches i have ever set foot on, it has bars, restaurants and changing rooms along the stretch of the beach. And just when you think the day is over you are in complete awe as you see the sunset into the Aegean sea-just superb.

Review by lisa mcbride from nottingham

we have been coming to calis for 5 years and we have travelled all over the world we love calis because the people are great the choice of food is great so many trips to go on the kids are never bored and made so fantastic friends turkish and english we love it

We liked it so much............

After spending many holidays in various parts of Turkey we were so impressed on our arrival in Calis beach we decided to move here. It was'nt a move made in a snap decision it took lots of planning and 4 years on we are still here enjoying our "Turkish" lifestyle. The best thing about Calis is it's lazy laid back attitude, when we go up to Bodrum or over the mountain to Antalya it's always goood to be back home in Calis. We have superb bars and excellant quality restaurants so if you like to fast food or al a cart there is somthing here for you. The sunsets are amazing and I am still amazed at the brilliant red skys at dusk. Calis promonade is perfect for a lazy stroll with perfect views over the bay, which always looks different. There is a "strip" where all the late night bars and disco's are so if you want to trip the light fantastic this is for you. Accomadation is provided by the many Villa and Apartments available or hotels and small pensions. Come on give it a try you will pleasently surprised!!
