Travel Guides: All Countries / Spain / Canary Islands
During your visit to Canary Islands you must see... What makes the Canaries so famous is their volcanic history, and so a visit to your local volcano is a must! The Pico de Tiede on Tenerife is the third largest volcano on earth and reaches 3700 metres. Its last eruption was in 1909. Lanzarote is home to a 20 million year old shield volcano and its most recent eruption was back in 1824.
If you are not so sure that Volcano climbing is such a good idea then you can visit some of the charming towns that live on the islands. One of the oldest towns is Teguise in Lanzarote. Its archetypal Mediterranean white washed walls look particularly striking against the dark volcanic ashes of the island. Arico in Tenerife is also worth a visit. The former capital, La Laguna is perhaps more culturally enriched with an old style university, numerous stately homes, and all round great architecture. The Cathedral and Church of La Concepcion are of particular interest.
