Cannes
Did you know?
As well as the film festival in May, Cannes also hosts festivals for the international music community, the global real estate market and the World Tax Free Exhibition.

Language

Visas
You do not need a visa to go to France, but take your passport.

Getting there
British Airways, BMI, KLM, Swissair, easyJet and Air France all fly regularly to nearby Nice with return fares starting from £90.

Flying time from London
One hour fifty five minutes.

Getting around
Buses are the only public transport in Cannes with single tickets costing 84p and ten-ticket carnets available for £5.60. A seven-day pass costs £6.20. Private taxis (£1.20 per km), limos (£134 per hour), bicycles (£13.45 for 24 hours) and boats (£20 an hour for a catamaran or £11.45 an hour for a dinghy) are available for hire.

Currency

Costs
Prices tend to rise during high season and especially during the film festival but as a rough guide: Half pint of beer, £2; 24-roll of film £2.50; moderate restaurant meal £10; litre of petrol 70p. Taxis cost £1.20 per km plus 40p for each item of luggage and 73p for each animal or children's pram.

Weather
July and August can be oppressive, not only because of the intense heat but because of the tourists. June and September are quieter and the weather is balmy but not overwhelming.

Most museums close on either Monday or Tuesday. In July and August - France's annual holiday period - many shops and businesses will shut. Shop opening hours vary but most take a long lunch and stay open till 7pm. Few open on Sundays.

Health - Before you go
No jabs needed. We have reciprocal medical care agreements with France - take an EHIC form with you (available from your post office).

Health - When you are there
No major health problems. French pharmacies are usually marked by a green cross and can be very helpful.

Warnings
Car theft and break-ins are common so make sure you lock you car at all times, and don't leave valuables in the car. Pick pockets and bag snatchers also operate in Cannes.

Emergency
Police, Tel 17; Ambulance, Tel 15; Fire, Tel 19; British Embassy: 16, Rue d'Anjou, Paris. Tel 01 44 51 31 00.

Customs
Some smarter restaurants and brasseries have no-smoking rooms, but these are often ignored by the locals. Although many people speak English, attempts at speaking French are much appreciated.

Pets
Under the pilot Pet Travel Scheme you can now take your dog or cat to France - with all the required paperwork and vaccinations. This takes several months to set up - check with your vet for details.

Tipping
By law, cafe, restaurant and hotel bills include service but most people leave loose change in a restaurant. Tip taxi drivers and hairdressers about 10%. Give ushers in theatres and cinemas 10p to 20p and hotel porters 50p unless there's a "pourboire interdit" (tips forbidden) sign.
