Travel Reviews : Colonial Quito

Review by Madeleine Nikel from Ottawa

Tourists should be careful and be aware of pickpockets. Stay off the trolley buses. Avoid crowds. Do not linger. Once you have this in mind then you can enjoy your stay in Quito.

Review by lisa Shusterman from Cincinnati

Quito, Ecuador was our favorite place to visit in South America. We will definitley return to Ecuador someday to explore this beautiful country further.

Review by EG Trotter from Keene

A lot of interesting historic sights to see. People are friendly.

Review by Barbara Keefer from Connellsville PA USA

Colonial Quito! A neat place to stay if you don't want to be in a typical city atmosphere. We were in Quito 24 years ago, and we were amazed at how it has changed. The Old Town is clean and safe. Lots of plazas for just sitting and watching the Ecuadorian world go by. There are a few nice cafes, particularly in Plaza San Francisco, and some great little restaurants, often hidden in side streets and out of the way places. Plaza Grande beautiful, with flowering trees and fountains. There were very few tourists here, so you don't feel as though you are "one of the herd." If you start hankering for the bustling city, you can always take the trolley (25 cents) or a cab to the new city.

Review by Debra Fairchild from Sarasota, Florida

This is an amazing city. There is so much culture and history. The architecture is very beautiful. I live in South Florida and was not expecting to see palm and magnolia trees in a mountain setting. What a pleasant surprise. It is extremely safe. When wandering about the city during the day, there are police "walking thier beat".

I love everything about Quito!

This place has it all- two blocks from the Grand Plaza in the most beautiful, historic part of town. The best of the old, a colonial building, and the new, a striking architecturally compelling, modern apartment.

Review by Paula Manor from Dundas

Colonial Quito preserves the architectural and cultural feel of days-gone-by. The vital history of Quito is still alive in the Colonial District where small shops, museums and breath-taking cathedrals line brick-paved streets. Indigenous Ecuadorians co-exist with Spanish influences to integrate cultural history through numerous family business enterprises of textiles, jewelry and cuisine. Colonial Quito is metropolitan while preserving the tapestry of historic cultures. It is inexpensive to visit but offers a rich experience and a vast reserve of pleasant memories.

Review by Loretta Nobel from Wilmington north carolina

Colonial Quito was reminded me of Rome Italy and also of Spain without the high prices. It beautiful and authenic and well worth the trip.

Review by Donna Judkins from Mareitta, GA

We had a wonderful, short time in Quito! We traveled with my parents (in their 60s) and my boys (12 and 9) in November 2008. If you have limited time I would recommend the Inti-Ñan Museum (the real equator), El Panecillo Hill (Pim's restaurant is at the top), Plaza de la Independencia and all the historical sites around it and the Teleferiqo, or aerial tram, on the skirt of the Rucu Pichincha volcano. Can't wait to go back and see Otavalo and the Amazon!

Review by Catherine Rule from Leeds

I found the architecture to be charming. The area is too busy, noisy, dirty - belching diesel everywhere. And the taxi-drivers were not honest. We only found one who would use their meter. The side streets are narrow and sidewalks are treacherous because no one steps aside and if you're in the street, cars will not slow down for you. I found excellent chicken soup everywhere and the folks in restaurants were mostly friendly. The plazas were delightful, with wonderful churches everywhere.

Review by Janet Benefiel from Kansas City

Quito is one of the best places on Earth to learn Spanish. The people in Ecuador speak more slowly and distinctly and their accent is appreciated by most Spanish speakers worldwide. There are hundreds of Spanish language schools in the city and all are very affordable. Since Quito is at an altitude of 9000 ft. and located on the equator, the temperature is mild all year long...never too hot or too cold. While studying Spanish, one has the great opportunity to learn so much history about the indigenous peoples, the Spaniards, and the merging of their cultures. The buildings in the Colonial Old Town practically shout history at you! And the continued diversity today of the people is wonderful. Indigenous women in felt hats with colorful clothing walk down the streets with very modern business men and women in suits. It is a terrific place to experience!

Review by Susanna Schantz from Clemson, South Carolina, USA

We have never had such thorough and thoughtful service from an agency as we did from Colonial Quito: immediate responses to email, advice about trip planning, follow up about experiences. We felt as if help would be available for any problem that would arise (none did). Terrific company. We hope to use their services again.
