Travel Reviews : Dalaman

Review by member Jennings from Nottingham

Dalaman is a working Town, not a Tourist resort, it is however right in the middle of the Turquoise Coast and offers a good base for sightseeing.

I liked its location near the Airport (no long transfers), and because it is not really "Touristy" eating out is relatively cheap.

Review by Tina Ribbons from Romford

The people were amazing. They were so friendly. I have never eaten food as good as i ate in the town. It is an unspoilt town which needs to stay that way. Just outside of the town you are met with breath taking views of the countryside and mountains.

Dalaman is a traditional small Turkish town, population around 20,000 and has the feel of a place where people live and work rather than being a tourist resort. There is a fantastic market on Thursday morning where the local farmers bring locally grown produce, it`s got a lovely atmosphere and is a must for a visit. There are many good restaurants that offer amazing value but dont expect any Discos etc. Dalaman is a great centre for a holiday, its only 10 mins from the airport and has many good beaches, activities such as horse riding, quad biking etc and other tourist resorts, all within about 30 mins drive. If you stay here you will definately need a car but if you want to be away from usual tourist type shops and crowds then it`s a good centre for a holiday.

Review by VICTORIA CEPEL from BEAUMARIS

Dalaman is a traditional Turkish town, not a tourist resort as such but a taste of the real Turkey. It is an excellent base for a holiday due to its convenient location for : The airport, several beach resorts, Saklikent gorge, as well as health spas and Gold resorts if that's what you're into. If you're tired of the tourist crowd then Dalaman has got the balance right.

Review by A Burrage from Northwich, Cheshire

Dalaman is for locals and not really for tourists however I understand investment is being poured into Dalaman soon so maybe changes are afoot

Review by Sue OGrady from Aldridge, West Midlands

Dalaman is not really a tourist place - just one long high street - but does have a good market there! The closest place for eating/shopping was Sarigerme which is about 15 minutes away.

WE LOVED DALAMAN!  What a lovely friendly town! loads of supermarkets and shops....... a great bus station with an office to book all your tours(ask for Beder he will sort you out and pick you up from your front door!!)... not as touristy as some areas which we loved! great barbers who do the best mens Turkish Shaves! Great restaurants! would reccomend Benji`s and even dinner at the local garage the OPET! you are treated like Kings and Queens in Dalaman! the storks are amazing! they nest on the local Mosque! 10 mins from the airport so when you arrive you can go straight to your apartment and relax! no more travelling! a great base as you can still get to all the other towns by the local buses/taxi`s or car hire!  The tours are magical.. would highly reccomend the Dalyan boat trip with mud bath! Safari jeep! our cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much! the boat trip out into the torqoise ocean! Saklikent Gorge and the Tombs at Tlos! Will definately be returning to Dalaman, fell in love with the town, the people, and the culture!

Great for kids who were truly spoilt! the Turkish are proud poeple and take pride in everything they do! In Dalaman you are near the mountains, the beach, Dalaman river which is breath taking, everything you could wish for!!! So if you are looking at this review and undecided... BOOK KNOW!! I promise you won`t be disappointed!

Hi Dalaman instant a tourist town but is still contains the hustle and bussel of a typical Turkish town. We didn't stay in Dalaman its self, as we wher situated a Lakeside villa, Akkaya Mountain. We used it for our shopping needs. For the man in your life, it's worth a visit to the barbers. They are able to get a traditional Turkish shave, I believe it wonderful, so my husband tells me , INCLUSIVE OF SOME SURPRISES! pleasant one's though. The local people of Dalaman are very helpful and certainly don't pester you.

Had a fabulous time with the family - hired a car, self-catered and just got on with it really ... If youre looking for a quiet, serene and peaceful holiday with the family then  Lakeside Villas could well tick all the boxes.  It has its own private pool and is miles away from the hustle and bustle of a traditional hotel based holiday. It didnt take too long to adjust to the driving (though this was our initial hang-up) and the views whilst driving were spectacular - many parts reminded us of the mountainous scenic and dusty routes and roads of Jamaica! This Villa comes highly recommended - it was safe, secure, peaceful and relaxing - we could have done with more time to be honest.  The welcome pack provided did not go unnoticed/unappreciated and was a nice touch.  The local people were great and the restaurants were affordable and enjoyable.  Shout out to Marcia, Julie and Lloyd your hosting skills and patience were most appreciated.  Would we go again - without any hesitation!

This area of Turkey, whilst still quietly rural, I can see is about to expand with the imminent start of the new marina and golf course complexes nearby, Dalaman represents very good value for holiday makers and those looking for long term investment in property.

Dalaman is wonderful place. It is picture perfect. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful. There are lots of things to do, boat trip in Dalyan was excellent, visiting Turtel beach and the mud baths. Boat trip to  the 12 Islands was also good. Oludeniz is a wonderful place and Fetiye is good for the market, which is an experience in itself. Calis is also a nice place with the waterpark here as well.

Review by Nada Korachi from Manchester

Dalaman itself is a small, quiet town that is quite rural in parts although it appears to be going through regeneration to make it into a more tourist orientated area. This is not an area where there is at present the touristy hub of bars and nightclubs, it is still a small, relatively unspoilt town which is still essentially Turkish but has been marked as a soon-to-be tourist spot. There are new villa complexes being build with communal pools, gyms and other amenities springing up in the more rural areas outside the centre, although they are all currently in the build stage. Dalaman has it's own airport which you don't have to travel far to get to, it's just 5 minutes away from the centre which is great especially at the end of your holiday as you don't have the mad rush to get to it. The town centre is not incredibly busy but the nice thing is that there is a little park area with cafe's and seating where the locals seem to get together and have tea or play backgammon and there is a playground for the kids. There are also the usual little supermarkets, small local restaurants, shops, bakeries, butchers etc in and around the main town centre and there is a police station. You can also find restaurants on the routes outside of the town in rural settings that in quite a few cases have really nice gardens with play areas for kid's and are are really nice to go and sit in. The other advantage of Dalaman is that it is strategically located, as it is very close by car to a lot of well known attractions and resorts such as Sarigerme beach, which is close by and one of the best beaches. Dalyan (which is great for evenings out to restaurants etc) and the famous Gocek (where movie stars and even Prince Charles have been) are only about 10-15mins away by car, you can get gullit rides to the Islands from these places. Oludeniz is also not far either. This are just a few of the places you can get to easily from Dalaman by car, it's a super place as a base to explore the Aegean and mediterranean coast. What more can I say!

Review by Peta Bartlett-Ward from Stamford

Dalaman is not a Holiday resort, but is within 30 minutes drive of other very attractive places and harbours along the coast.

Rental Holidays in Dalaman

Destination Guide : Dalaman

A great place to stay en route
Why go on holiday to Dalaman?
Most visitors to Dalaman's international airport are usually passing through from charter flights for Mediterranean Turkish resorts like Marmaris and Fethiye. Bus connections to resorts along the coast are good and there are direct flights to Istanbul and Ankara from the airport.

The town itself is 5.5km from the terminal and has little to offer holidaymakers. Main street Ataturk Caddesi has shops, banks and basic restaurants and there is a good sandy beach at nearby Sarigerme which offers windsurfing and other activities.

How much will it cost?
Accommodation: from about £180 for a week's self-catering package in high season and from £160 for a return flight during the same period.

When should I go?
Turkey gets blisteringly hot in July and August, with daytime temperatures regularly reaching higher than 95F (35C). May and September are more comfortable. Winters are generally wet and cool, although clear blue skies are not uncommon.

Who's it aimed at?
Families, couples and young people in transit to resorts along the Mediterranean coast. Daytrippers and backpackers are well served by Dalaman's otogar (bus station), which sells tickets to many major destinations, including Istanbul.

What are the must-sees?
Take a 30-minute bus ride to Gocek, a delightful small fishing and yachting port about 23km east of Dalaman, for a relaxing day out. Enjoy a "12 island" cruise to nearby bays, get scrubbed down at a modern Turkish bath and hunt for colourful wallhangings, bedcovers and other souvenirs at excellent shops, such as Bazaar Anatolia.

Hire a car and drive along the highway east of Dalaman to popular resort Fethiye, past perfumed evergreen forests and breathtaking coastal scenery.

What will I spend?
Prices vary greatly, but as a very rough guide: a bottle of beer in a bar £1.50; moderate restaurant meal £20 for two people; a bottle of wine in a restaurant £8-9, a bottle of wine from a supermarket £4-5, 24-exposure film £2.50; four-mile taxi ride £8-£15, litre of petrol 75p.
