Language
French

Visas
Not necessary for European passport holders.

Getting there
The closest airport is Bordeaux. From there take the train or hire a car and drive to Perigueux (120km) or Bergerac (100km). Otherwise, take the Eurostar to Paris, then the TGV (high speed train) to Angouleme or Bordeaux, or a slower train direct to Perigueux. Or drive, crossing by ferry with a stop in Normandy, Champagne or the Loire - it's about 7.5 hours from St Malo to Sarlat, and 8.5 hours from Cherbourg.

Flying time from London
One hour and 40 minutes

Getting around
By car is the easiest and best way to see the sights. There are trains from Sarlat in the north of the Dordogne to Perigueux in the centre and Bergerac in the south-east, as well as buses. Cycling is a good way to get around the Vezere Valley and its many prehistoric sites.

Health - Before you go
France has a reciprocal health agreement with the UK. Make sure you have an EHIC health form, available from UK post offices.

Health - When you are there
No major health problems in France. Pharmacies are usually marked by a green cross.

Warnings
Theft is the biggest problem tourists face in France, so use common sense and keep an eye on your possessions. Book in advance to visit prehistoric caves, as numbers permitted are limited to minimise damage.

Pets
As part of the Pet Travel Scheme you may bring your dog or cat to and from France with the correct documentation. This takes several months to set up - see your vet.

Tipping
