As an American, Cyprus is not a tradiational holiday desination. Traditionally, many Americans vacation in the carribean. In comparing Cyprus to the Carribean, I can say it was a refreashing change. The Island is beautiful with many options to enjoy the water, i.e. boating. The island is riff with resturants that feature not only traditional dishes, but such favorites as pizza and hambergers.
Since traditional culture and custom is important in all holiday travel, Cyprus does feature Greek dancing entertainment shows, some shops that sell handcrafted needlepoint items, and leather goods. LOTS of counterfiet designer goods. Remember..you may be arrested if you purchase such things and re-enter the USA with them, so do not be tempted to buy cheap imitations. Also, silver goods are plenty. KNOW YOUR SILVER PRICES BEFORE YOU BUY.
Lots of old ruins and history here.
Of course, this is a tourist place, so there are many "tourist" traps. For the well traveled American, just remember that everyone has their hand in your pocket. Know your prices BEFORE you leave the USA. Currency is Euros and also British pounds. KNOW YOUR CURRENCY EXCHANGE. Stay away from the "time Share" induces. They will actually approach you on the street and offer you something free, like a bottle of wine that tastes like vinegar.
Overall, a great place to visit a new culture, but still a tourist place. If they exploited their Greek culture more, it would be well worth the holiday return.
