Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Costa del Sol - Andalucia / Malaga to Marbella / Fuengirola

Travel Reviews : Fuengirola

Review by Kenneth Dixon from Burnley

As the apartment benefits from having a lift, the resort of Fuengirola is ideal for people who have difficulties getting about because the town is so flat and the Promenade is easily accessable to all concerned.

Review by Tracey Rundle from Ilderton, Ontario, Canada

Wonderful, safe, clean place to have a vacation!

Destination Guide : Fuengirola

Fuengirola
Why go on holiday to Fuengirola?
For a beach holiday in a lively resort that's been a favourite haunt of Britons for decades. Expect high-rise hotels, densely-packed beaches in high season, souvenir and clothes shops and familiar British meals on restaurant menus. Fuengirola has more of a family appeal than Torremolinos, another Costa del Sol hotspot 18km down the road.

How much will it cost?
Accommodation: a week's self-catering package costs from about £250 in low season, while a seven-night, all-inclusive break starts at around £400 during the same period. Return flights to Malaga airport, an hour's drive from Fuengirola, are from about £100 depending on the season.

When should I go?
This is a year-round destination. May, June and September are the ideal months if you want to avoid the summer crowds and extreme heat. Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in winter to 34C (93F) in summer.

Who's it for?
Families and groups of sun-seekers wanting a cheap package holiday at the beach, not too far from the UK. Lively nightlife and entertainment are guaranteed, along with British dishes at local restaurants and local specialities such as grilled and fried fresh fish.

The area is ideal for sports fans, offering nearly 40 golf clubs, several marinas, tennis and squash facilities, gyms, riding schools and swimming pools.

What are the must-sees?
Fuengirola has a 6km-long sandy beach to chill out on and warm Mediterranean water. A large and bustling street market held on Tuesdays is a highlight, as is the local zoo. In July and August it is open until midnight so visitors can observe the nocturnal habits of leopards and other creatures in the moonlight.

Constitution Square and the Church of Nuestra Senora del Rosario are landmarks in the centre of town. If you like old architecture, visit the Castle of Sohail, built in the 10th century.

Take a bus tour to pretty hillside town Mijas, 8km from Fuengirola, and browse around its craft shops, cafes and restaurants.

What will I spend?
Prices vary greatly, but as a rough guide: bottle of beer from 80p, a 24-exposure film for your camera £2.50, three-course meal for one with wine from £6, bottle of wine from £3, a litre of petrol 45p, short taxi ride from £5.50.
