Guardamar del Segura is ideal for a family holiday if you choose the right location of your villa. We stayed in a villa, La Herrada, just outside a small town called Los Montesinos. We were attracted to the quaintness of a small town and had hoped it would enable us to avoid some of the more touristy areas. However, as lovely as the individual villa was, the area was nothing to write home about. The complex, La Herrada, is clearly a relatively new development as there was a lot of building work being carried out. The landscape was flat and dusty and covered with identical villas. Needless to say, the area did not have the rustic feel we were after and in fact, came across as pretty souless. Most villas appeared to be inhabited by Ex-pats. Our taxi driver from the airport informed us that they referred to the area as "Mini-England"! So this is not the place to come if you seek some real spanish culture! The beaches at Guardamar and Elche were beautiful and we enjoyed lazing around on the beach and grabbing a bargain at the local markets. However, there is not much else to do in the area, especially for children and things did become slightly repetitive. Car hire is essential as the town of Los Montesinos does not have a regular bus service and there is not much to do there either. We spent quite a lot of our "spending" money on taxis to and fro. I think if we had had a car we would have been more inclined to explore freely and at our own pace. As it was we had to arrange times convenient for the taxi drivers to pick us up etc and felt this rather limiting. All in all, we did enjoy our time in Guardamar del Segura but we don't feel there would be enough entertainment to entice us back!

Guardamar had a lovely feel to it it was small had plenty of upmarket resturants and pubs, lots of shops to browse in.It was nice to sit out in one of the cafes and watch the world go by. People were very friendly and service with a smile. The prices in the restaurants were very reasonable and the food was freshly cooked. It was casual and very relaxed.
