Gozo is a lovely place to visit, it still has it's own character rather than just being a tourist destination. The people are very fiendly and everyone speaks to you - most people speak English. Driving on the left and having lots of English road signs makes life much easier as you do need a car here. The beach at Ramla is lovely and not crowded at all. There are plenty of places of interset to visit if you want to ( and if it is not too hot) but you can also find lovely places in which to just relax if you want. Lots of diving oppotunities and you can use the ferry (which runs every half hour from early am until late pm) to visit Malta itself.
Good holiday destinations for all sorts of people, active, quiet, families, couples. Very pretty scenerry.

I have family that live in Malta and my sterotype of Gozo was that it was always the quieter of the two islands. However, in our opinion there is a beauty and peacefulness on this island that cannot always be found on Malta. The streets are very clear, you don't find much rubbish about and the local residents are very friendly. A visit to Azure Window and Fungus Rock comes highly recommended, I've been there on more then one occasion but will still visit it again.

Gozo is a small island with about 10 villages. If you're 20 years old bachelors and looking for night life and parties, you would probably prefer Saint Julian's (in Malata Island) as it has areas crowded with bars and night clubs.
But if you simply want to relax and enjoy walking and sight seeing, Gozo may be a relevent destination.
In addition, people are lovely there.
Maybe a good compromise for everybody is to split your stay between Malta and Gozo.

Gozo is a very small island which has not yet been spoiled by excessive building and is not yet overrun by tourists even at the height of the season. The hotels tend to be very localised around the bays (which are very specific as Gozo is almost entirely cliffs on one side, as we found when we did our boat trip on the last day!) and the areas between are almost entirely agricultural (lemon groves, olives, figs etc) Beautiful lagoons with stunning views, not too many sandy beaches but the sea is wonderfully warm, scuba diving was good fun for our teenage boys, many fish to see. Plenty of fish restaurants, also lots of Italian influence on the food. Weather very hot, welcome relief from ghastly English summer this year! Just about everyone speaks good English which is helpful. There is a Maltese/Gozitian language which appears to be loosely based on Italian, almost like a dialect. Loved it, would recommend it as a destination, especially if you enjoy watersports.

Over the past year we have been on 10 trips around the world. This trip was to visit the island of Gozo. Looking at the travel websites we were very excited to visit this island and in general just relax and get some sun.
History: There was an abundance of historical sights everywhere you went and this part of the island is amazing. Visit the Heritage Malta site before going to find out the different locations around the island to visit.
People: We have mixed feelings about the people that we interacted with. We think that at any location you visit you are going to run into those people who are friendly and those who are not. I would say it was 50% of each on this trip. Some people went out of their way to talk to us.
Costs: Everything seemed to be on the 'lower' end of the cost spectrum with a few exceptions. Those being, Liquor, suntan lotion, taxi fares and especially the farmhouse.
Transportation: The public transportation system is limited with bus routes only running to most locations a couple times of the day and not after 18:30. The bus in our town only ran 3 times a day and all of those are before 10:00 and not even once at night. The taxi drivers can rip you off, and you need to negotiate the fare before entering and be clear about it.

We went to Gozo in December which is definetly out of season but we were looking for some peace and quiet which is exactly what we got. Lots of the restaurants were closed but we still managed to find several good places to eat.

Gozo is great if you want a very relaxing holiday. All the locals are very friendly and make you feel welcome. The island is beautiful and very scenic and would definatley go back again.

The comment of scruffy is not mean't to be derogatory. Far too many places across the Mediterranean have become homogenised and indistinguishable from one another. Gozo has avoided that and still appears to go it's own way much as we remembered it from 15yrs ago.
