Travel Reviews : Kas

Review by Iain Dove from Edinburgh

Good food; friendly people; lovely climate (end of September); lots to do; historic / cultural sights; would go back.

Review by Maureen Standen from Coggeshall, UK

Kas is a stunning village- my first impression was of a film set, too good to be true. The people are welcoming and friendly and the restaurants and food are wonderful. I would recommend a boat trip to the ancient sites and local islands, a day to be remembered. I loved the quiet of the area, very little traffic, no loud music or barking dogs - perfect!

Review by Lisa Valente from Leicester

I found Kas a very friendly town. The people of Kas were extremely helpful & kind & couldn't do enough for you. The town is small with lovely cobbled streets & alleyways lined with all kinds of shops, cafes, bars & restaurants. I found a lot of the shops to be rather expensive & the Friday market was aimed more at the locals for their fresh food needs rather than bargain goods for tourists.

There were several tours that you could go on but I found some of the descriptions for the tours a bit misleading. The only thing that dissapointed my family about Kas was the fact that there were no water sports in the town like Jet ski's.

Recommend Mercan restaurant - great food, if a little frenetic

Review by Christopher Moore from Datchet

Kas is much more compact and a little quieter and less commercial than Kalkan, a few miles to the west, though still quite "touristy" with English being very well understood throughout. Everything seems to be within about a five minute leisurely walk from the Dolmus terminus at the harbour, so very easy to get around. A very good selection of restaurants, with a couple of excellent seafood establishments and a number of friendly family-run restaurants (we can recommend BAHCE for a typical Turkish meal). Prices, though still below those of the UK, are higher than one might expect, with a meal for two with wine costing around €60+ at the higher end restaurants. There are a couple of historic sites to visit in Kas (e.g. the amphitheatre and caves), and plenty more to visit within an hour or so drive - hire a car or scooter for the day and explore a little. Sandy beaches are few and far between, so be prepared for rocky terrain and small pebble coves rather than sweeping crescents of golden sand. The hotels and many villas on the Peninsula have private swimming platforms at sea level, accessed by steep steps (no beaches except either side of the narrowest point entering the peninsula, some distance from the residencial areas), but the sea is clean and the swimming safe. A car is probably not essential for Kas or the peninsula properties unless one is planning to be doing a lot of touring - the Dolmus services are regular, punctual, and inexpensive. Plenty of diving and excursion trips on offer and, for the more adventurous, paragliding from the high hills around the town. All in all, something for everyone, though probably not if you're looking for an Ibiza-type clubbing venue (though there are a couple of bars and discos for those so inclined).

Kas is a perfect stop off for at least 3 days while touring Turkey...optimal time is 5 days. You can hire Sadik to take you to Meis, a Greek Island, for a day of sight seeing and lunch. Upon return, enjoy an Efes(Turkish lager)with the captain and boat mates. Sadik will be happy to take you for a day trip w/lunch to secluded inlets for swimming, Lycian caves, lunch in a cove and welcome afternoon siesta. Lunch was terrific!! Lamb kabobs, grelled whole fish, coban(shepards) salad, turkish pasta, bread, fresh fruit and wine. Also, go to see the underwater city one day, Sadik can arrange for that tour too! Just go to the port and ask for Kaptain Sadik. In town, lots of great music(for a lot of different ages and tastes)pizza, and other foods. the fresh fruits and vegetable can't be beat!!!! Buy some and eat as snacks! Hang gliding was brilliant!! Soaring over the hills to breath taking views of the Mediteranean Sea...magnificent!! And, Ada Beach Resort is a MUST for a day of idle rest and lunch...also great breakfasts and dinners. Super people who will go out of their way to make you feel at home. A gem of a location with some of the most hospitable people I've ever met on vacation with lots to see, like the Roman amphitheater, water sports galore, super restaurants and the beautiful blue water.

Review by Andre Van Der Bijl from London

Spent a week in Kas and felt almost like a local when I left - Great restaurants and little bars where I was welcomed on my second day already as a long lost friend... Stunning views - great shops - easy to get to from the Peninsula very friendly people making you feel very warm and welcome - not mass tourisme but upmarket. Enough to do to keep you busy for at least a week and that is without exploring the outskirts. We also went to the Gorge and walked the gorge through water which was one of the highlights of our trip. Can strongly recommend Kas if you are looking for good food - little nightlife and when you like sitting on a errace watching people and everyday life going by.
