As with many areas in Spain, evidence of boom and bust abound - lots of apartment complexes but ts of abandoned site also. La Zenia is quiet with beautiful beaches, nice restaurants and good pubs - especially Paddys Point! The current road improvements need to be completed as soon as possible and perhaps more facilities for pedestrians - although I do note new pedestrian walkways under construction.
La Zenia was a good experience.

Although only a small place, there are three fantastic beaches within easy walking distance. I am surprised that none of the big travel companies have set up camp in this local. A car is handy if you want to get out & about but the local bus service is very easy to use as an alternative. If you just want to lay on a beach all day then this is a perfect place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay in La Zenia immensely. We rented a car from the airport as there was little difference in the price compared to a transfer I would say that a car is not essential for your stay but it gave us great flexibility enabling us to travel around the area at will. There are some beautiful places to visit. I highly recommend a visit to Cartagena great for shopping but make sure you find the marina area which is delightful
Everything you could wish for is within 10 minutes walk there are lots of restaurants and pubs close by but not close enough to interfere with your stay we were there over the New Year and went out on New Years Eve and celebrated the coming of 2009.
I would recommend this to anyone without hesitation and I would return to La Zenia in a flash .

La Zenia is a nice complex both for families and couples. Pubs, cafes, shops all nearby. Also beach not far away. Garden of our apartment a big plus. Main concern would be security of the whole area, especially any ground floor apartments as they are very vulnerable, and it's not very nice to have to use chains and huge padlocks to keep out intruders. Not only did they really frighten us the first night, but other flats were at risk on other nights, and property was stolen while we were there........handbags, cash, credit cards, passports, and even cars. More police presence and harsher penalties would help a lot.
