Lutz lies only 5 minutes from the main north Tampa population area by road . However the difference is striking in that whilst some parts of North Tampa appear run down , Lutz appears populated by a community who are generally well off and i suspect that it forms a part of a generic commuter area . Any relative prosperity does not then deliver an experience which is overly fussy or pretentious but one of normality and rural friendliness. In essence we felt comfortable, welcomed and safe.
Lutz lies in a Lakeland area which is fairly heavily wooded , although not to the extent of being dark or confining and is populated with many small lakes . perhaps each being only a few hundreds of yards long. The community has populated their houses around the lake shorelines and consequently the area does not feel formally planned but has many little roads going here and there. Google maps' street view or Google earth gives gives a good pictorial idea.
In terms of location then its variable depending in your aims. If you like proximity to the main Florida theme attractions its really only good for Busch Gardens at about 20 minutes. If you want to be near Disney then i would recommend staying nearer Orland. If you like the beach life, the Gulf Coast beaches, such as Clearwater, are at least 40 Minutes and Saratoga being 1H 30 via the interstate.
However if you don't mind driving and want to be a accessible to many options in both Central and South Florida then it really is quite a good place to be . Not least of which, because you're not on the beaten path its a bit cheaper but Lutz actually provides good access to the I275, I75 and I4, None of which are more than 20 Mins away.
In terms of community sensibilities , It was plain to see that the area , at this time in Oct 2008, had a large number of John McCain Campaign stickers so I suspect its predominantly Republican in nature. I believe in UK
terminology that equates to a conservative approach rather than that of a liberal or labour based view of life. One other aspect that was very noticeable compared to my generic view of rural Uk was the large amount of churches / religious buildings in the area although i suspect that any influence, either Religious or political would be a function of being a permanent resident rather than a visitor.
Overall, for our holiday with a family of six with children of 10 - 18 who had visited Florida previously it worked out very well.
