Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Canary Islands - Canaries / Gran Canaria / Maspalomas

Travel Reviews : Maspalomas

Review by Fiona Slevin from Dublin, Ireland

Maspalomas was relaxing and easy (once I had a car). The shopping, apart from cosmetics, is tatty beach-wear. The beaches were poor. Found a couple of excellent restaurants - though were fairly rushed from our table despite relatively high prices. Overall I thought the place was ugly, appallingly planned and there was nothing visually appealing about it.

Review by Richard Hart from Boston

We've previously been to the other Canary Islands - Lanzarote, Fueteventura and Tenerife but much prefer Gran Canaria. It is altogether classier with none of the tacky touristy features found in parts of the others. Scenically it's much greener and less like a building site. We much enjoyed coastal drives to the surrounding area and being able to enjoy a leisurely meal while surveying the stunning sunsets.

And then we came back to Newcastle to minus 2 degrees............ Oh well, the memories linger on

We stayed in an area know as Sonnennland which was very quiet and exactly what we wanted from the holiday

Review by richard wilson from sheffield

Maspalomas is by far the best resort we have stayed at in Gran Canaria-it is an exclusive family orientated/couples resort but also would appeal to people of a more liberal mind set aswell. The main Beaulevard -the FARO , is full of classy restaurants/shops and looks beautiful, The Las Vegas Casino/Drag Show is in the resort aswell and is another stunning place to visit there, plus for the nightlife there are many good quality bars such as Funky Budda , Casta Cubana/Kareoke(mon-thurs), for families there is the Holiday World Family Theme Park with lots of fun rides to go on aswell as ten minutes away from "Sioux City" theme park (where the early 70's spaghetti westerns were filmed) to visit.

If you're going to Gran Canaria- just go to Maspaslomas (but if you're the 18-30 type person go to another resort like Playa Del Ingles)

FIVE STAR RESORT.

Destination Guide : Maspalomas

Maspalomas
Why go on holiday to Maspalomas?
You'll think you're an extra in the Hollywood flick Star Wars when you take a wander through the vast expanse of Sahara-like sand dunes directly behind Maspalomas's four-mile stretch of beach. A couple of miles southeast of neighbouring resort Playa del Ingles, and a few notches down on the boisterousness scale, Maspalomas is a dream for swimmers, surfers and is also a popular nudist and gay destination.

How much will it cost?
Gran Canaria Las Palmas Airport is at the northernmost tip of the island and a 90-minute drive from Maspalomas. Britannia, Monarch, Iberia and British Airways operate regular flights with return fares from London from £77. A week at the Melia Tamarindos Casino hotel in the heart of the resort costs £525 based on two adults sharing.

When should I go?
You can bet on getting a tan at any time of year, with year-round average temperatures of 18-24C (65-75F). December to February is the coolest period but it is also the island's busiest time, so prices are higher.

The best deals can be snapped up between March and May or from November to mid-December. Hedonists should aim to be there for carnival in February and March when the island is in celebratory mood and there are weeks of parades and fancy dress contests.

Who's it for?
Sun-worshipping families who want to relax on one of Europe's most spectacular beaches and don't mind bumping into holidaymakers wearing less clothes than Britney Spears promoting her new single.

What are the must-sees?
Away from the dunes and beaches the nearby 18-hole golf course is a popular attraction and the kids are well catered for with the massive Aquapark and Holiday World theme parks only minutes away.

Wild West themed Sioux City is also worth a day trip as is the Caldera de Bandama volcano.

What will I spend?
Prices vary between the resorts but expect to pay roughly: bottle of beer £1; roll of camera film £2.50; moderate restaurant meal £10; litre of petrol 40p; short taxi ride £6.
