Travel Reviews : Moncarapacho

Review by Jenny Rixon from Chelmsford

The area is quiet and not commercialised and a good centre to explore some quaint places from.

Review by Daniel Defalco from Stevenage

an amazing ara of the algarve still very much unpoilt

Review by Evelyn Taylorson from Gosport

Moncarapacho is a lovely quiet unspoilt area of Portugal, ideal if you are looking for a quiet relaxing holiday in 'real' portugal.

Review by helena erwin from ballymena

Fantastic area for anyone looking for a holiday away from the tourist areas

Review by rita granger from estoril

If you want to be in a place that is genuine and still unspoilt by tourism but that is near enough to several beaches and touristic areas of the Algarve, and very near to an excellent and cheap fruit, fish and sea food market (olhao)...then you should choose this area. In 14 days of hollidays we never went out to dine, and had wonderful meals of grilled fish (namely excellent sea bass) and seafood.

Review by Mark Grout from Bromley Kent

Very rustic but what we wanted. Excellent villa ticketed all the boxes. Couple who looked after villa were extremely helpful as we were delayed by nine hours and they left emergency food for us and gave directions to a local restaurant.

Review by Sean Sargent from Kildare

Moncarapacho is a charming village with more to offer than one would expect at first sight.  There are a couple of great restaurants offering excellent food and very good value (one with free WiFi access), a number of small supermarkets, petrol station, ATM, pharmacy, newsagent with English papers, cafes, church, museum, and much more.  It is only about 5 minutes from the bigger town of Olhao which has a number of large supermarkets/hypermarkets, shopping arcades, large fish market, marina, etc.  The sandy beach at Fuseta is only about 10 minutes away, while Faro is an easy 20 minute drive.  Moncarapacho and the surrounding area is typical of the unspoilt Eastern Algarve, yet is only minutes away from the buzz of the Western side if you feel the need for that before returning to the peaceful tranquility in the evening.

Review by Ian Hookway from Stoke-on-Trent

A really nice small town - half a dozen good and inexpensive restaurants, a few shops stocking pretty much anything that you're likely to need and a good market.

Review by Nigel Miller from Kidwelly

A great break off the beaten track - well suited for families looking for a quiet area but within easy reach of blue flag beaches and traditional markets.

Review by Mike Bailey from Gosport

Moncarapacho is a small, sleepy rural market town in the Eastern Algarve. The surrounding area is either farmland, citrus groves or scrubland. Away from the bustle of the local beaches & ports, it benefits from the resulting peace and slower pace of life which typifies the area. However, you are never more than a 15 minute drive from gorgeous sandy beaches at Fuzeta, or the vibrant fishing port of Olhao. For wildlife lovers, the unique Ria Formosa ntaional park is a "must-see". Highly recommended for those who want some peace and tranquility away from the madding tourist crowds of the Central and Western Algarve.

Review by Valerie Nicolson from Inverness

Moncarapacho is a typicial Portugese village well away from the comercialised areas of the Algarve . Totally unspoilt

Review by Anne Fleming from Cambridge

Portugals best kept secret, - the Eastern Algarve. Moncarapacho is an attractive unspoilt little market town. It has a lovely square by the church where one can sit under the Jacarander trees at Anna's restaurant and drink wine.

All the local people are very friendly and helpful. An excellent gipsy market is held on the first Sunday of the month adjacent to the cemetry.

Review by Mandy Lawrence from Worsley

I love Moncarapacho but I would like it to be kept a secret.

Review by Rod Bacon from Fleet UK

Moncarapacho is the real Portugal - a place to meet the locals and live thier life-style. A few nice restaurents and local shops selling all the essentials.

Review by Gordon Biggar from Surbiton

Moncarapacho was actually better than we thought at first sight. It's just a very small very quiet rural town with nothing to recommend it. There are 2 supermarkets with reasonable prices, a v good bakers housing a coffee/cakes bar, a couple of restaurants - we went to Colibri (I think) twice - very good but very simple. To find any more to say would be surprising.

Review by Jaci & Keith Chesworth from Hazel Grove Cheshire

Moncarapacho a small town with some excellent inexpensive restaurants do not be put of by the exterior of some of them.

Review by betty buchan from edinburgh

Moncarapacho was only minutes away by car and was convenient to buy groceries and the daily papers. Could buy papers on the day they were printed and not two or three days later. Reasonably priced cafes but I found the place itself a bit boring. Not much going on!

Review by Colin & Aideen Rochford from Wicklow, Ireland

This holiday was perfect for us. We returned home totally refreshed and relaxed. This was top class in every aspect. The accomodation was spotless and very well maintained. In the villa itself there was a very well laid out guide of "where to go and what to do". We had three young children with us and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The local bistro and the restaurants in Moncarpacho were all very welcoming and the food was great. This holiday was our seventh time to visit Portugal... this visit was by far the best, we really relaxed ..We will definitely be going again.

Review by Julia Gascoyne from Wokingham

We were a bit lazy the first week and generally popped to the town in the afternoons for extra provisions, when Moncarapacho seemed extremely quite; also you may be disappointed at the lack of fresh fish in the local supermarkets, albeit that Olihao is not that far where you'll find everything in abundance. However, if you do manage to go to town in the morning you will find it to be quite a bustling little place, with plenty of locals watching the word go by in the cafe's a small bars and there is an indoor market just behind the first bar on the left going in to town which does supply a good range of fresh fish, veg and meat.

It's great to have a choice of local 'supermarkets' as what you can't get a one, you're bound to get at the other.

Great choice of restaurants too and the local 'internet cafe' is a real bonus for home coming check in.

Review by Jackie Beckett from Morecambe

Unspoilt rural Algarve with a wonderful Sunday Market with local farmers selling fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and local produce.

Review by Helen Hopwood from Ampthill

Pleasant, unspoilt area with a handy supermarket and some friendly places to eat

Review by Janet Whitaker from Grundisburgh, Suffolk

We found it a pleasure to be on holiday in such an unspoilt, rural setting, but if you wanted more hustle and bustle Villamoura is only a 30 minute drive away. Moncarapacho is close to great golf courses and lovely beaches.

Review by PETER CONEY from BOURNEMOUTH

Having been to the Algarve 3 times before we decided to explore the Eastern side and were not disappointed. The restaurants in the village were very friendly, particularly with the kids, and the food we had was excellent.

Review by Kevin Stone from Torreguadiaro, Spain

A wonderful escape to recharge the batteries. Very quiet and relaxing!

Review by Mandy Lawrence from Worsley

One of the most unspoilt area in Portugal, We have been going for over 10 years and would like it to be kept a secret.

Review by jim harwood from northants

Good value relaxing holiday with lots to do.

Review by Ian Whitehouse from Shatton, Derbyshire

Whilst the Eastern Algarve is undeveloped as yet, the small towns contain some great restaurants/bistros. Moncarapacho itself is fairly typical unspoilt small town where the development has been restricted to parts of the surrounding countryside. It reminds us of the Western Algarve 25 years ago!

Review by Diana Scott from Stafford

Moncarapacho was a typical small Portuguese Village, few shops and restaurants. Quite adequate for a get away from it all holiday. Nice food, and very friendly.

Review by Joanne & Steve Dudeney from Essex

A wonderful little town which needs exploring to be fully appreciated!
