Travel Guides: All Countries / Caribbean / Jamaica / Montego Bay

Destination Guide : Montego Bay

Caribbean with a bit of comfort
Why go on holiday to Montego Bay?
Jamaica's most important tourist resort is on the island's north-west coast and boasts a string of smart hotels on private beaches, offering the safety and seclusion not always guaranteed in towns like Kingston.

Known locally as MoBay, the best of the resort is the natural beauty of the bay, its beaches, historic houses and golf courses.

Great too for water sports, nightlife and arts and crafts shopping.

How much will it cost?
Seven nights at a three-star resort hotel with half board is from £865. A seven-night, all-inclusive holiday in a four-star resort hotel is from £1,264.

When should I go?
The temperature is year-round tropical and averages 80F (26C) to 86F (30C). The high tourist season runs from mid-December to mid-April, with Christmas and Easter being busy. Prices are highest then and the resort will be crowded. Save pennies and enjoy a quieter break by visiting during the low season between May and November.

Who's it for?
Those who want a taste of the Caribbean with a bit of comfort. A holiday here affords you the chance to explore authentic Jamaica if you feel like it and return to all your typical tourist facilities at the end of the day.

What are the must-sees?
In Montego Bay town, take a walk down picturesque Church Street with its Georgian buildings, including the Town House, peek in to St James' Church with its striking stained-glass window, and see cobbled Sam Sharpe Square, named after a national hero. Browse the myriad market stalls crammed with traditional island crafts.

Visit Barnett Estate, an 18th-century sugar plantation with its restored Bellfield Great House and take a bus tour around the plantation to learn about how mangoes, bananas, coconuts and sugar cane are grown. Three miles from Montego Bay, visit Rose Great Hall, another plantation house that's a popular tourist attraction.

What will I spend?
A three-course meal will set you back around £12.50, a large bottle of wine £6.25, a bottle of beer around 40p in the supermarket or 70p from a roadside stall. A short taxi ride is from £2.70, a packet of cigarettes around £4, a 24-exposure roll of film is from £4.50 and a litre of petrol is from 40p a litre.

*Feeling inspired? Book a break to the Caribbean here.
