| | | An unspoilt gem | | Why go on holiday to Montenegro? Formed in 2003 when the Yugoslavia Republic dissolved following the Balkans conflict of the 1990s, the tiny Republic of Montenegro in south-eastern Europe has been billed as the "new Croatia".
It's become a truly fashionable destination - helped by a fan base that includes Princess Anne, Sophia Loren, Kirk Douglas and Claudia Schiffer. This unspoilt gem is no bigger than Wales - but size isn't everything after all.
Beach-lovers will love it – there are 117 beaches to choose from along its 300km stretch of Adriatic Coast. And it's jam-packed with beautiful buildings. Given time, Montenegro will become hip - and expensive - so the sooner you get here, the better.
How much will it cost? Prices for a week's B&B stay in low season start from around £376pp. Flight-only deals between London-Tivat in September cost from around £260. Flight-only deals from London-Dubrovnik cost around £220.
When should I go? Expect dry summers when temperatures can climb to 30C and the sun shines up to 12 hours a day. Typical coastal temperatures hover around 23C-26C. The winters are mild and sunny although the mountains behind the coast can get rainy.
Who's it for? Travel trend-setters; culture lovers and beach bums.
What are the must-sees? Budva is the country's biggest coastal resort with a 2000-year-old history. It boasts cobbled streets, small squares, historic churches plus galleries, cafes, bars and boutiques and has a chic and trendy vibe.
Just over a mile away is Becici, a haven for watersports addicts. A beautiful sea promenade leads to a fishing village with a lovely selection of restaurants and shops.
The celebrity hideaway of Sveti Stefan was known as the St Tropez of the Balkans, attracting stars like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. The island consists of a 14th century walled village which is connected to the mainland and two spectacular beaches by a narrow sandy isthmus. Next year, it will be transformed into an exclusive spa hotel by Amanresorts. The rich and beautiful are sure to follow.
A Unesco World Heritage site, Kotor's Old Town is a must for culture vultures. Climb 1,000 steps to the ancient fortress for breathtaking views of the bay. Expect Venetian inspired architecture, labyrinthine streets, ancient churches and museums. Skadar Lake, 30miles long and 10 miles wide, is one of Europe's largest lakes and is home to 270 bird species. Take a bird-spotting boat trip. You may be lucky enough to see pelicans in flight. Dine on carp or eel at a lakeside restaurant.
If you like action, head for Zabljak where you can go mountaineering, walking, or explore ice caves and glacial lakes. The Tara Canyon attracts rafters and in winter, the pistes attract skiers.
What will I spend? A seafood dinner with wine can cost £10. Cocktails cost around £1.50, a bottle of wine is around £3, and a three-course meal can cost less than a fiver.
Any special events? In neighbouring Serbia, the annual Exit Festival is one of Eastern Europe's biggest festivals. Taking place in the stunning surroundings of the ancient Petrovaradin Citadel in Novi Sad, the four-day event attracts 250,000 revellers and big names from the world of music. It takes place in July next year.
