Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Costa Tropical - Granada / Motril

Travel Reviews : Motril

Review by Paul Kelly from Lancaster

Motril offers a full range of convenient shopping services. It is a working Spanish port in a booming part of the coast. It has good promiximity to the tourist resorts of Salobrena and Alumencar, which offer the additional range of seaside tourist options. It also has good proximity to the scenic rural Lecrin Valley and the Alpujharras villages. The historic bustling city of Granada is only 45 minutes away. The Al Hambra is one of the most impressive historic buildings in Europe.

Review by Hugh Wellesley-Smith from Leeds, UK

Motril is not a tourist centre, it's a busy Spanish workaday town. It's a good place for essential shopping with several supermarkets to suit all tastes. The centre is pleasant and has a good mix of bars and restaurants.

Review by member Haydock from Bournemouth

Motril, a charming working town more than seasonal resort, good clean beaches and excellent shopping. Easy base to explore La Alpujarra, Granada & Sierra Nevada. Remains unspoilt and Spanish, unlike some nearby resorts like Nerja - not overrun with Brits

Review by Louise Balcewicz from Nottingham

Motril and the Costa Tropical in general seems like a popular holiday destination for the Spanish families. We were there at the beginning of the summer break - beginning of August when it suddenly came alive with people travelling down to the coast. There was definitely a buzz about the place when this happened with ferias going on up and down the coast. Not your traditional brit holiday on the costas, but then not everyone is into that, if you're into experiencing the seaside from a spanish point of view and sampling authentic spanish lifestyle this is a very interesting destination. Hardly met any brits in all our stay there, and not many locals speak english.

Review by sonya halls from ipswich

the most beautiful and relaxing holiday i have ever had

Review by ingrid Wolff from Amsterdam

not a specially interesting town. we did our foodshopping there and that was about it. for touristy trips we took the car a little further to Salobrena, the alpujarras, Granada and Malaga. Motril is authentic in the sense that it is very spanish and not built for the tourists.

Review by David Monaghan from Italy Cross, Nova Scotia

Convenient commercial centre with a lively shopping area and interesting historical centre.

Review by Soraya Dizia from Surrey England

Lovely surroundings - a great beach and good roads into Granada and other places of interest in Andalucia

Review by Carole Stevens from Los Blancos

At this time of the year (February) Motril was not crowded. It has a good level of shops and supermarkets. The road system around the area is very good and it is easy to get to other coastal regions from there. Like a lot of Spain there are always scruffy areas with dumped rubbish usually left by the farmers

Review by Anthony Langford from La Rochelle, France

It is more of a Spanish working town than many places on or near this coast. Unspoiled.

Review by edward + linda parkinson from milton under wychwood

We stayed in Pantollon 3kms from Motril.Motril itself lacks character "El APARTAMENTO" Cortijo Nuevo was a welcome retreat.Beaches, first class, excellent choice of local restaurants.

Review by Noel Palmer from Weybridge

Infrastructure of the area along the coast/mountains clearly having major improvements, coast road, mountain excavation/ terracing for agriculture

Review by Nigel Hill from Kingston Upon Hull

A lovley town thats on the up .

Review by Mark Rogers from Herne Bay

Motril is a developing area of spain. It offers holiday makers or longer term tenants the opportunity to experince a spanish experience rather than the package costa.

It is ideally situated for travel to the Sierra Nevadas and the city of Granada. If you need an injection of british spain then a drive along the N340 Coast road will take you to the more well known hoilday destinations of Almunecar, Nerja and further along Marbella.

Motril is predominantly Spanish with knowreal ex pat community and a developing tourist trade which is aimed at the spanish as much as the English.

Review by Rupert & Anne Wood from Cambridge

You wouldn't come to Spain for Motril town itself. We were about two or three miles out of town. It's an indistrial town with all the amenities, but does not cater much to tourism. However, it is very well located, with good beaches nearby and within easy driving distance of Malaga, Granada and the Sierra Nevada.
