Travel Reviews : Nerja

Review by David Bratby from Shrewsbury

Our rental apartment was on Torrox Costa. There are frequent buses to Nerja. A taxi for four one way cost 8euros. The whole area is fantastic Nerja is a must. The atmosphere of the town just buzzes! The restaurants are varied in cuisine and really friendly. Please try Paco Maris restaurant-BRILLIANT. All in All what a SUPERB holiday!!!

Review by Chrissy Broderick from Stockport

Nerja is a gem everyone has forgotten about. Convenient distance from the airport, beautiful scenery, with gorgeous variety of beaches and coastal walks which can lead to different clusters of restuarants and tasteful bars. The Spanish Quarters is very traditional and has a feel of Spanish history again with restaurants, spanish bars of all varieties. Fantastic for teenagers starting out wanting more independence going to clubs dancing the night away, Tutti Fruitti is great without worrying the parents. Loads of others places to visit, water parks, mountain villages, horse riding, summer beach parties, golf, water sports etc the choice is yours because you can just rest, relax and chill the choice is yours.

Review by PETER HILL from YORK

We only visited Nerja twice during our stay in Torrox Costa but on both occasions we found it to be enjoyable and relaxing. We are used to visiting Benidorm where we have Spanish friends and although we enjoy this we found our recent holiday in Torrox Costa and the Costa del Sol to be safer and more relaxing. We will definitely return.

Review by Michael McGrotty from Selby

Torrox was a farily typical rural spanish sea side town, all the ammenities you could want but quite and relaxing. Nerja was a beautiful town and seemed very upmarket in places. It was however a little cramped with narrow streets and almost no parking. This part of the world is close enough to the facilities in and arround malaga (parks and attractions) with great transport links but at the same time far enough away from the tourists and the hustle and bustle to make it relaxing and even a reasonably authentic taste of spanish life.

Destination Guide : Nerja

Why go on holiday to Nerja?
Nerja, 56km east of Malaga on Spain's southern coast, lives for tourism but is older and more charming than other towns to its west. It has a good beach at Playa Burriana and the lookout point Balcon de Europa, which offers great views along the coast.

How much will it cost?
Accommodation: from about £200 for a week's self-catering package based on two sharing, rising to about £700 for a fortnight's half-board holiday, also based on two sharing. Charter and budget flights to Malaga are from about £70 return in low season.

When should I go?
July and August are the hottest, busiest months with average daily highs of 29C/85F and up to 12 hours of sunshine per day. June and September are also pleasant — only slightly cooler than July and August, with average temperatures of 27C/80F. They are cheaper for package breaks.

Who's it for?
Mature travellers and couples seeking a low-key holiday on the Costa del Sol, close to lots of fascinating sightseeing.

What are the must-sees?
Wander around Nerja's old town, parts of which were built in the 15th century, and visit churches, crafts shops and Nuestra Señora de las Angustias Hermitage, a retreat dating from the 16th century.

Join the tourist stampede to the Cueva de Nerja, vast underground caverns (one of which doubles as a concert hall), with cave paintings and impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Take a day trip to Granada, 90 minutes' drive away, to visit the spectacular Alhambra. The Moorish fortress was built in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and its lavish Nasrid Palaces once housed kings. Allow most of a day to do it justice.

October brings the lively Feria de Nerja, five days of fairs and amusements. In July, look out for the Festival Cueva de Nerja's flamenco and music concerts.

What will I spend?
Prices vary greatly, but as a rough guide: bottle of beer 75p, a film for your camera £2.50, moderate meal £5-£8, litre of petrol 45p, short taxi ride £5.50. All prices are approximate.
