Getting around Nice is best explored on foot but it also has a good bus network. A Nice by Bus pass is valid for one, five or seven days and includes the airport bus. Taxis are plentiful and cars, motorbikes and bicycles can be hired.

Weather Nice is a year-round destination with its Mediterranean climate giving hot, dry summers and mild winters. Daytime temperatures often top 27C (80F) in summer and rarely dip below 12C (54F) in winter. October and November are the wettest months.

Opening hours Most museums close on either Monday or Tuesday. In July and August - France's annual holiday period - many shops and businesses shut completely. Shop opening hours vary but most take a long lunch and stay open till 7pm. Few shops open on Sunday.

Health - When you are there No major health problems in France. If you need over-the-counter medicines, French pharmacies are usually marked by a green cross which is lit up when they're open.
Warnings The south of France has a problem with tourist theft, mostly pickpocketing, theft from cars and snatching handbags. Don't live in fear - just be sensible, especially in crowds.

Customs Don't beckon the waiter by shouting "garcon". Nowadays it's considered an insult. Say "s'il vous plait" instead.
Pets The UK and France are participating in the pilot Pet Travel Scheme so you can take your dog or cat on holiday provided it has all the right documents. This takes several months to set up. See your vet for details.
