Getting around There are plenty of good rail routes (frequent between Ottawa, Kingston and Toronto) if you're covering long distances and good bus links too. Car hire is another reasonable option. Get on your bike (or hire one) in cycle-friendly Ottawa which has an extensive network of cycling routes.
Currency Canadian dollar.
Costs Prices vary but as a guide: pint of beer £2.50, moderate restaurant meal £15, short taxi ride £3-4, A litre of petrol 40p.
Weather Ontario covers over a million square miles so temperatures vary greatly from one region to another. The province generally has warm and fairly dry summers. The east coast is usually cooler and has more rain. Southern Ontario has the hottest summer temperatures. Average July temperatures range from 23C (74F) in south western Ontario to 19C (64F) in eastern Ontario. In winter, the province is blanketed by snow, with the highest snowfall east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay where up to 134 in (339cm) can be found.
Time difference Most of Ontario falls within Eastern Standard Time, five hours behind London.

Voltage 110v. Plugs are mainly two-pronged like the US and you'll need to bring an adaptor to use your razor or hairdryer.
Opening hours Banks Mon-Thurs 10am to 4.30pm and Fri to 5 or 6pm. Post offices Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm. Shops keep similar hours to the UK.
Health - Before you go Take out good travel insurance as medical and dental costs are high.
Health - When you are there No real health problems in Canada although rabies is present and can be spread by raccoons and foxes - only a possible problem if you're heading into wild areas and woodland and if you're bitten or scratched. Most animals are more likely to run away.
Warnings Canadian beer is usually stronger than that in the UK - don't drink and drive. When camping, observe safety rules, especially with regards to fires and keeping all food stuffs well wrapped up and out of temptations way for bears, raccoons and other woodland creatures who could become a pest at best or, in extreme cases, a danger.

Customs As in the US, toilets are usually referred to as 'the bathroom', 'restroom' or, for men 'the washroom'.
Pets Canada is now part of the long-haul Pet Travel Scheme but it's a long, complicated prodedure. Ask your vet for details.
Tipping Add 10 to 15%. Everyone from the taxi driver to the waitress to the hotel porter.
