Destination Guide : Pattaya

Party in Pattaya
Why go on holiday to Pattaya?
Thailand's busiest and brashest beach resort is among the best in the country for water sports including diving and snorkelling. The water quality is poor so dive trips tend to take you further afield. If it's nightlife you're after, there's plenty on offer here. There's no doubt that its reputation as a sex trade destination has tarnished Pattaya's image. This prevails despite efforts to clean up the resort.

How much will it cost?
Five nights in a top hotel and spa is from £599 including flights. Seven nights in a three-star hotel is from £499 including flights. Flight-only options to Bangkok are from £380. A room in a guest house is from £5 a night.

When should I go?
November to February is drier and temperatures are not so oppressive. New Year (Songkran) is celebrated in mid-April. Other festivals include Loi Krathong in November, when candlelit floats are placed in the waterways to herald good luck for the coming year.

Who's it for?
Party animals, both couples or singles. Anyone wanting a quiet life should either stay in the confines of their hotel or choose another resort. Having said that, there are some very nice resort hotels that you may never want to leave.

What are the must-sees?
Take a diving trip to one of the offshore islands. For beaches, head out of town to Jomtien about three miles away or take the boat to Coral Island. Bangkok is less than three hours drive.

What will I spend?
Prices vary but expect to pay roughly: £1 to £1.50 for a local Singha beer; £2 for a roll of film; £4 to £7 for a moderate restaurant meal; and £3 for a short taxi ride.
