This site asks me to review Pest as that's where our flat-rental was but Budapest is both Pest and Buda so have reviewed both here. Don't worry about which bit to stay in - all very accessible. Just try to get as central as you can. Great place to spend a long weekend although it's best to plan it carefully as there's so much to do and see (we are going back at some point to "finish it off"!!). Stunning old buildings, great public baths/spa's, good bars with cheap beer/wine and great food. I don't even eat meat (so the goulash was out!) but found loads to eat - the grilled smoked cheese is divine! Despite being land-locked there was freshwater fish available and also a very good fish restaurant, Ocean, that flies fish/seafood in daily. They don't get many top-stars doing gigs but the local bands doing covers are great fun and surprizingly good! Don't miss the tour of the Opera house (3pm and 4pm each day - but check!). There's also a great walk you could create around the art-deco buidings (they call it Secessionist) which is nice if that's your bag. Some interesting WWII museums (we gave the House of Terror a miss but I'm sure it's very good and also appealing to those interested in torture methods!). Museum of Applied Arts is good but check which exhibitions are on there before you pay to see them all (not being particularly interested in Ottoman carpets we just bought tickets for the museum itself) Walk down the Danube and see the iron shoes memorial for Jews killed - quite chilling when you see it. Very evocative. Try Petrus bar (decked out downstairs like a metro station!), have cocktails at the swanky Gresham hotel and find the restaurant called Fatal which has very good Hungarian food. All in all a great weekend venue! Watch out for the taxi-drivers - we were ripped off twice! Oh and NOTE there are two airports (well, two terminals 7kn apart!) so make sure your taxi driver goes to the right one! Grrrrr!!!! I'll be back though - loved it!
