Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Canary Islands - Canaries / Lanzarote / Playa Blanca

Destination Guide : Playa Blanca

Whiter than white
Why go on holiday to Playa Blanca?
The clue to Playa Blanca's allure is in its name. Once a quaint fishing village, this growing resort is surrounded by some of Lanzarote's whitest, most unspoilt beaches including the most famous on the island, the Papagayo coves. Despite the increasing number of tourists, the charming Canarian ambience of white-walled buildings with British racing green shutters remains.

How much will it cost?
Return flights to Lanzarote's main airport, a 30-minute drive from Playa Blanca, start from around £80 in the low season to as much as £200 during high season.

Seven nights in the five-star Princesa Yaiza start from £420 for two adults sharing. A week's self-catering for two adults in the three-star Corbeta Hotel starts from £220.

When should I go?
Temperatures are sunbathing-friendly all year with January days rarely failing to top 20C. Hottest months are July and particularly August which averages 11 hours of sunshine a day. Midsummer rainfall is negligible and even peak periods are seldom overcrowded. For the island's most colourful celebrations visit in February or March for the annual carnival.

Who's it for?
Families and older couples primarily looking for a relaxing beach holiday with a decent choice of restaurants.

What are the must-sees?
Apart from the beach, you'll have to hire a car or take the patchy public transport to the island's main attractions. Among them are the volcano-ravaged Timanfaya National Park, the Jardin de Cactus and the Jameos del Agua water grotto. You can also take day trips to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.

What will I spend?
Bottle of beer from 65p, camera film £2.50, moderate meal with wine for two £20-£25, litre of petrol 31p, short taxi ride £2. Costs will vary.
