Portimao was a really nice place to be based for our holiday - it had super beaches, access to lots of lovely local towns and the Portuguese people were so friendly. We had a great time and would not hesitate to return - a really nice place for a good family holiday.

Portimao is a beautiful town, typical of the algarve, inexpensive by irish standards. Plenty to do and non intrusive as regards being able to walk about at night time without being hustled into restraunts and bars etc. Ideal family location.

We had visited Portimao a few years before and went back this time again to sample the excellent sardines at Don Barco (under the arches by the Port). We weren't disappointed - six large sardines each for about £4.00. Portimao itself is very picturesque and a nice place to visit. However, the other place which is roughly the same distance as Portimao from the Villa is Sagos. We ate there three times (different restaurant each time) and each one was a good experience. The main part where the restaurants are is away from the marina, down the dual carriageway, park up just by the Fairground Carousel and walk up into the town - fresh fish, tasty chargrilled meat - and you might be lucky (as we were) to find a restaurant doing crepes suzettes for dessert - lovely bit of theatre with all those flames!
Villamoura is another good place to visit - very well kept town - golf courses, five star hotels, lovely marina with lots of huge cruisers and nice restaurants for people watching.
The other place near to Portimao is Alvor (it actually is part of Portimao). Fabulous beach and again - nice place to walk around.
All in all whether you like golf, restaurants, watersports, dolphin watching, scenic villages and sunshine then the Algarve satisfies all your needs.

Portimao was only visited once only because I preferred Alvor and Lagos. I did not like Praya Roche with all its hotels probably because I prefer a quieter holiday.

Slide & Splash water park, well designed for all ages. Can take in UV tents for grass area or hire umbrellas so OK to take in young baby & still watch slides. Possibly packed in high season but no queues & relaxing in mid season.
Praia de Rocha beach we found excellent with young children. Either walk down the steep steps or walk along the front to access without steps. Beach bars good value. The drive from the beach back to main road can be a bit hectic, worth getting a map of Portimao as sign posts not fantastic.
