| | | Fishing for Colom-pliments | | Why go on holiday to Porto Colom? Bang in the middle of Majorca's busy south-east coast, Porto Colom is a fishing village with a gently sloping beach and a surprisingly large selection of bars and restaurants. It's easily accessible from the airport and a good place to base yourself for touring the rest of the island.
How much will it cost? Several no-frills and larger airlines all fly regularly to Majorca. Return flights for less than £50 are not unheard-of. A double room for two adults during peak season at the three-star Hotel Belsana costs £49 per night.
When should I go? May to June and September to October are the best times to avoid the young and lively crowds and higher prices of July and August. In summer, temperatures average 23-30C (70-88F) and in winter they drop to 6-15C (43-58F). There is very little rainfall on the island, particularly in July and August, and the sea is warm enough to swim in from as early as April right up to October.
Who's it for? Food-loving families who want to eat well while they relax and for kids wanting to make the most of the beach.
What are the must-sees? The twice-yearly fiestas are the village's biggest attraction. The Three Kings celebrations in January are always lively but the most popular is July's Verge del Carme. A couple of km from Porto Colom are the bizarre rock formations and underground lake of the Cove dels Hams ("cave of the fish-hooks"). Close by is the Aquarium de Majorca with exotic fish including piranhas and electric eels.
What will I spend? Small bottle of beer from 80p, camera film £2.50, meal with wine £9, litre of petrol 45p, short taxi ride £5.50. Costs will vary.
