| | | Watersports galore | | Why go on holiday to Puerto Plata? This lively, small town on the northern Amber Coast of the Dominican Republic is situated at the base of Mt Isabel de Torres. Dating back to the 16th century, there's plenty of history here in a beachside setting.
The 5km seafront promenade known as the Malecon is perfect for early evening strolls.
The beaches are not the best or most isolated on the island but are adequate and offer plenty of watersports.
Close by are several resorts, like Playa Dorada, which feature popular all-inclusive deals.
How much will it cost? Seven nights on an all-inclusive package is from £719. Last-minute flights can be had from as little as £179 but expect to pay an average of £400-500 most of the time. A quality beach hotel is from £70 a night.
When should I go? Temperatures are warm year round with daily averages of 25C (77F), and most rain falling between May and September. The Dominican Republic is on serious hurricane watch during July, August and September. Puerto Plata has more rain than resorts on the south coast.
If you're into Latin dancing, Puerto Plata stages an annual merengue festival in the first week of October. There's also a week-long cultural festival in June.
Who's it for? Great for couples and families who want a Caribbean beach holiday at a reasonable price.
What are the must-sees? Amber from the Dominican Republic is highly prized and if you visit the Amber Museum housed in a Victorian mansion in Puerto Plata you'll find out why. There's a gift shop here where you can buy quality amber items which, naturally, don't come cheap.
The 16th-century fort of San Felipe doesn't boast much of a museum but is still worth a visit and has good views over the port.
Ride to the top of Mt Isabel de Torres by cable car for even better views and to see the botanical gardens.
Children may appreciate a visit to Ocean World with its aquariums full of tropical fish, sharks and corals, plus sea lions and a chance to get up close and personal with dolphins.
What will I spend? A moderate three-course meal will cost between £4 and £10, a bottle of wine between £4 and £6.50 and a beer between 55p and £1, depending on whether you buy it in a supermarket or a bar. A packet of cigarettes will set you back around 55p, a 24-exposure film is around £3.85. A short taxi ride is from £1.50 or if you want to drive yourself, a litre of petrol is around 82p a gallon.
