Roquetas de Mar was a really enjoyable place to holiday. The promenade is very very flat so no problem for wheelchairs pushchairs etc. Was realy nice to stroll to the harbour mid morning and see the local fishermen bringing back their catch. At the other end of the promenade was the shopping area which also had a funfair for small children. Meals were very affordable and so were drinks. All in all a very nice place to spend a relaxing holiday.

| | | A flavour of Spain | | Why go on holiday to Roquetas de Mar? Roquetas de Mar on the Costa del Sol is a popular package destination but retains its Spanish flavour, unlike many other resorts on the Costas. It has good sand and shingle beaches (although the sea can be a little choppy at times), an attractive mountain backdrop and several annual festivals to celebrate along with the locals.
There's a weekly street market and a marina surrounded by tapas bars and restaurants. The seaside promenade is good for an early evening stroll.
How much will it cost? Charter flights to Almeria are from £79 and Roquetas is about a 45-minute drive from the airport. Accommodation: seven nights in a self-catering apartment is from £289 including flights.
When should I go? Spring temperatures hover around 70F (21C). In July and August, it's in the high 80sF (30sC). Though popular, the resort doesn't feel as crowded as some.
June sees the Festival of San Juan with bonfires and a fiesta on the beach; in August there are fiestas and fireworks celebrating Our Lady of the Sea.
Who's it for? Families, senior citizens and anyone looking for a fairly quiet, relaxing beach holiday with an authentic Spanish flavour. There's enough to keep you busy, but this is no party resort.
What are the must-sees? The Cabo de Gata national park, with Las Salinas salt flats, some 4kms from Roquetas is home to water birds including the flamingo. In late August up to 1,000 flamingos can be seen here.
Film fans will want to head out to Mini Hollywood in the Tabernas desert where a string of spaghetti westerns were made.
Or you can take an excursion into the Sierra Nevada mountains behind the resort.
What will I spend? A moderate three-course meal will set you back around £6.50, a bottle of Spanish wine from the supermarket is £2-£4, a beer in a bar is from £1, a six-pack of Spanish lager from the supermarket is around 70p per bottle. A pack of cigarettes is from £1.40 for the cheapest brand and £1.70 for a well-known brand. A short taxi ride is £2-£3. A litre of petrol is from 58p a litre. A 24-exposure roll of film is around £3.45.
