Salamanca is the size you can walk round and get to know well. The university is very old and still retains some of that atmosphere of ancient learning. But it is a place for the young, hundreds of them learning Spanish and up late every night in the bars and discos. I had already been there on a course last year and wanted to learn more Spanish shopping and doing ordinary things that having a flat involves. Hence, for me being in the centre was important but a bit of walking is welcome. Though across the river is new and totally different and I wouldn't have chosen that if there had been a flat free nearer the cnetre.
